Using Words of Power to make a Single Caster Class

Homebrew and House Rules

I am considering doing away with all casters, for a homebrew setting btw, in favor of a single full caster who could learn any of the Words and customize the spell list as the character wished. I like the idea of a spontaneous caster, who can build spells on the fly (but the player should still have some basics worked out ahead of time), but am unsure if I want spells known to work as a wizard or as a sorcerer.

Thoughts?

Very interesting idea! Good thinking!

My initial thought is: how do you (and your players) want to handle acquiring new words? Do they want to carry a spellbook, find ancient Runestones, make them up, pray for them, sacrifice a brindled calf in the pale moonlight? I would suggest that you go the Wizard route. Words of power are considerered slightly underpowered and allowing your casters to add new ones to their books (or juju charms, or whatever) as they're able to would be a good idea for versatility.
From an RP point of view, giving out new words would become another goodie that players could get along the way besides treasure, xp, rp awards, prestige, etc. That's always a good thing in my book. If you drop the fabled Whatzit of Doohickey on them and it grants a new word, you're eventually going to have all of your spellcasters with 90% of the same words as they all dance before the Deallie-Bopper of Stuff, and then perform the ritual of Argle before the statue of Whatzizname, and so on. It's not fun to not be able to do something unique in the group. Either way, let them individually find words that they want or find a way to grant different words to different casters, but keep it fair.
My thoughts at first glance, take them for what you will.

Evil Dave commands it!
