If I wanted to set a series of encounters around a castle besieged by an army somewhere in the Inner Sea Region - not in Tian Xia - where are the places that this might fit? Here are some thoughts that I have, but I'd like to have the most extensive list possible before I make my selection:
1. Somewhere around the Hold of Belkzen, either in or on the border with a non-orc territory
2. The Worldwound or Lastwall
3. Somewhere in the River Kingdoms
4. Nex/Geb/Alkenstar

Nirmathas/Molthune. The two are at war, after all.
The River Kingdoms. Just the River Kingdoms.
Brevoy. There's a civil war brewing there.
Irrisen/Land of the Linnorm Kings border. There's a cold war going on.
Taldor/Qadira border. Again, brewing war.
Cheliax/Andoran border. For obvious reasons.
Sargava. In the 'European castle besieged by natives' sense.

Possibly - but I was looking for a place with a hot war between two armies; I don't see a cold war being a place where you might find an army actively trying to take a castle/keep/fortress from another army.
I'm also, for reasons of my particular species of mild OCD, reluctant to develop canon past the "brewing war" to the "actual war," state, if you see what I mean.
Are Cheliax and Andoran actively fighting to take territory from each other?
Looking at Nirmathas and Molthune, that might work for me. But it strikes me that a Molthune/Nirmathas conflict looks more like Molthune invading and Nirmathas attempting to fight them off with guerilla tactics - does Nirmathas have a standing army, or at least individual lords/barons with levies to call on?
Thanks for the help, DMW and WER. :)

The River Kingdoms are the easiest. Plenty of armies and always at least one war.

Totally understood. I feel the same to some degree.

Officially? No. But considering the vast hostility and shared border an unauthorized expedition of some sort seems possible.

Usually? Sure. But a Molthune fortress near the border being besieged is possible, as is a keep in Nirmathas.
And any organization in Nirmathas would be a lot less feudal than that, but a local leader might absolutely have a fortress and loyal men fighting for him. Though you'd need a good reason he couldn't just abandon the fortress and hide out in the woods as is more typical.

No problem, always happy to help. :)
