For those of us who have busy schedules, are PFS games ever played over the internet? Do you use a virtual tabletop?

Yes there are.

I've had the pleasure of playing Before the Dawn, Parts I and II online, listed below. Australian time-zone, we used a combo of IRC, Skype and Combat Assist (mapping tool). Didn't use virtual tabletop.

Most definitely there'll be others if you search the boards or the [ Event Calendar ] which even has an "online" location/category listed. I suspect the prime criteria would be finding an online group to suit your time-zone.

Yes. Absolutely use a virtual tabletop. Check out PFS Online Collective for online games. Depends on the GM as to what virtual table gets used.

A few different table tops.
Maptools - free and probably the most commonly used
TTopRPG - Another free one
d20Pro - Pay but probably the best interphase and directly works with herolab
Fantasygrounds - another pay one
Infrno - Web based inter-phase. Can not remember if they are a pay for service yet or not.

For sound most people use skype or have a ventrilo server

Ah, sorry, I thought "virtual tabletop" was the name of a specific software application, I didn't realise it was a category of software applications - in which case, Combat Assist probably is a "virtual tabletop" as it shares an uploaded 1" gridded map between online participants, and the GM moves coloured counters with players initials to indicate character/monster positions - also has an initiative list on the side.

Clarifying further on Combat Assistant - it's not a full virtual tabletop like Maptools, and it's not intended to be, for good reason. It's designed to be primarily a mapping tool - a grid with counters on it that supports background jpg's (that can be exported out of Pathfinder PDFs and laid "behind" the grid).

The GM sets it up, gives the players their IP address, and the players connect to the GM through Combat Assistant.

It's intended to be used alongside either chat (like IRC) or voice conferencing (like Skype), it's intended that you have your own dice in whatever form you see fit (either real dice or a dicebot or whatever you like), and so forth.

The reason it was created was because it tends to have less bloat than the full virtual tabletops and the design focus is that it is easy and intuitive to pick up.

It does have a few other handy features like a sidebar (where you can keep player HP/AC, and change initiative order easily), you can play sounds through it (though my group rarely uses this - but the option is there), and, importantly, easy map aligning to fit the grid.

It might sound like a lot, but I really have to stress again that the focus of the application is that it is easy to use and intuitive. Left click to place counters/walls, right click to remove them, drag and drop to move them. And the rest is pretty straightforward once you have a look at it.
