Idea about implementing Knowledge Skills

I would like to see a localized Knowledge(Market) skill that let you analyze recent sales data, not only showing current Buy and Sell orders, but also recent historical data on actual sales. There's a world of difference between knowing that someone is offering Widget X at 100 gold, and knowing that a number of people have actually paid that much for it recently.

I just wanted to point this idea out to the community. Nihimon offered the first good idea I have seen concerning the implementation of knowledge skills. All knowledge skills could make real relevant statistical and historical information available to you. I think this is a brilliant idea, what you do with it is still entirely up to you. I would also say increasing the skill, increases the volume of the information...so a beginner might only have access to the past days worth of information, while an expert might have access to a years worth of data.

I like it, thank you Nihimon.

I wonder how it would fit thematically. One doesn't go into people's shops and read their books.

Well, among other possibilities, there's the expedient of just asking the shopkeepers about their sales. Someone who has the potential to provide them access to better vendors might well know a lot about what their current vendors are charging them, as well as how much volume they're doing.

Tell that to my local used book dealer :p

I really like this idea. However, in addition to getting a greater volume (which hopefully includes more detailed information as well) of information at higher skill level, I would also like to see better sorting options opened up. Not only being able to see what's for sale in this hex, but what swords are for sale in this hex? What swords are for sale in this hex that have a +3 or better enchantment? Or for other knowledge skills, What do local critters offer as loot and harvested resources. What have miners pulled out of the ground lately in this hex? What demons are not resistant to fire? What undead create spawn?

Tell that to the booksellers from TES.

Or, you could make a gather information check at the teamsters.

Certainly, and that is a whole variety of Knowledge skills. In fact, I could easily see knowledge skills be a neutral skill tree in themselves. I would love to design such a tree. And, like all skills, you spend time researching the local market, you take away from your potential ability with a sword. Building your character is fun, every benefit comes at some sacrifice (of course, you could just train your sword next)...
