Tattoo Messenger

Homebrew and House Rules

I got this idea from the Tattooed Sorcerer's tattoo familiar and the Animal Messenger spell.

Basically, you would use the Inscribe Magical Tattoo feat to create a tattoo of a tiny or smaller animal. This tattoo would be able to separate from the character it is inscribed on to carry written messages. For RP purposes, it could also double as a pet.

Pricing it as a at-will use item puts it at 6,000 gp. Considering the fact that a character could conceivably go through an entire adventure path without finding a situation in which its useful, would you price it lower?

I would see it as a use-activated spell that can be used once per day. It would work like animal messenger except it would create actual animal - either Conjuration (creation or summoning) effect *or* Illusion (shadow) effect. I would make it equivalent of 3rd level spell (one level higher than standard animal messenger which requires actual animal to be enchanted).

3rd spell level times minimum caster level of 5 times 2,000 gp for use activated item divided per 5 for one use per day gives 6,000 gp. However, each use lasts five days anyway so I'd say that it can be summoned and bound into tattoo multiple times each day as long as it does not get killed (which would either render the tattoo inert for one day or completely destroy magic of the tattoo - I would have to read more on tattoo magic in PF to decide).
