Full Metal Jousting

Sovereign Court

Watched the first season of this. This is NOT your Medieval Times or Renaissance Faire jousting, this is the real deal.

The host of the show I have seen joust many times at the International Jousting Championships in Estes Park and once again it is the real deal full on with pine lances not balsa or breakaway.

There are a few of the jousters that did jousting at Medieval Times and they learn quick this is the real deal

1 PT for striking the shield plate of the opponent (Also includes lance guard if in the way)
5 PT for breaking a lance on your opponent
10 PT for un-horsing your opponent
-5 PT's for striking your opponents head

Instead of being totally eliminated if you lose, you sit on the sidelines in case one of the team you are on can no longer continue.

Finally a REAL Sport. These guys make football players look like Pansies

OH part of the training riding a horse as the trainers hit you will as hard as they can swing metal baseball bates, as well as having 6 of your team hit you with a battering ram which they say still does not compare to having a lance hit you

Watched this the other night. It was kind of fun to watch but I think the show would be better if it went beyond just the joust. Other medieval themed combat exercises should be included. Bring in Fencing and Archery. And in addition to the two teams squaring off with one eliminated player via the joust, I think they should be competing for different prizes and striving for "achievements".

Still, I plan to watch it and see how it develops.

Did anyone notice the gaming references in tonight's episode? Have they been in the whole time and I've just missed them, or was tonight the first time? Tonight I heard Ripper say..."You're rolling the dice, and the DM is on your side" I also heard the guy jousting (I forget his name) say..." We rolled the dice, and they came up criticals.", talking about the double unhorsing. Pretty good show. Those hits have got to hurt.

So who do you think will win the competition?

I was so happy to see Josh Knowless make it and was very glad to see Josh Avery get beat. it was a good joust.

Knowless while cocky is not over the top and is more respectful of his peers. Avery on the other hand made excuses for everything wrong he did, or how he was going to do this and that and only occasionally produced what his mouth was talking about.

I liked Rope and was bummed he did not make it into the final,s but hopefully he will continue in the sport as I see potential in him.

Hiltman is another I am glad made it. Anyone who went through what he did with a lance in the groin and continues, then to hurt his little finger and continue on, says, he has what it takes for this sport.

In the end I am on the side of Josh Knowless, not to mention I think he is pretty HOT! I love big guys with long hair, and I love red hair to boot. To bad I'm spoken for and he is so young :P

Anyway to all those that made it and jousted. HUZZAH!

Not really. The horses are doing the bulk of the work and it seems prohibitively expensive to just get into for laughs. Still, it's intriguing to watch from the sidelines.

Watching real jousting live is a rush. The show doesn't really capture that same feel very well, but it is still really entertaining. I am excited for the finale, but there is a no guarantee that the final joust will be the best.

The only complaint is that the people competing are all really new to the sport and thus we never really see the more exciting runs, though the last one was really professional.

And as for the horses doing the bulk of the work, that isn't true at all. Yeah, the horses are important, but the jouster needs to guide the horse, control it, level the lance at just the right moment, seat the lance (so it doesn't crush the hand on impact,) aim the lance at just the right moment, and upon impact they need to control their mount once again and keep themselves in the saddle. The horse follows the guidance given to it and charges.

I like the guy who was hit in the groin a few episodes back for the win. If you take a full lance strike to the family jewels and still joust, you have exactly what it takes to win $100,000.

Saying the horse does all the work is about like saying that the Couching Staff in football does all the work.

Take a horse and I'm talking a horse that either is draft or part draft horse that is running at about 25 - 35MPH at the point of collision, that is NOT under the control of the rider because the rider HAS to release the reins and said horse just runs until stopped usually by the rider who has to regain his reins after he passes his opponent.

Then add in a person in full armor which weights around 50 - 75 pounds +, a helmet that has very little visibility and then only in a forward arc. Put a lance in his hands that is not light and is 10+ feet long which has a very bad center of balance taking a lot of strength to hold and to raise and lower as you pass and aim for a spot that is about 1 foot square and hit that square as you are bouncing, holding a heavy lance, time it just perfect, hold and twist the body perfect while not holding onto anything and then expect to be hit with the force impact of a small car, and then once hit try to maintain your seat and not fall 4 feet to the ground on a running horse which IF you've never had happen to you hurts like bloody hell even in sand is wrong.

The force of impact on a foot sized spot on the body would be like having someone hit you with 12 foot ball players running at full speed, hitting you with their helmets in that spot all 12 mind you in that spot which is impossible and then falling 4+ feet

Jousting was the 1st real extreme sport and it was also the real sport of Kings, not horse racing.

Even though I am female I have played football, I also have rode bulls and bareback broncs (just to prove to my brother I could do anything he could do and just as good) Jousting is as easy as it looks. Not to mention many of these guys joust with pretty good injuries. I once say a Guy (Charlie Andrews joust with a broken right shoulder after taking a spill from a horse.l yes it WAS broken. Show me a football player that would do that. They don't have to because they make their easy cool Million for sitting on a bench and shooting at people and doing drugs, drinking and driving, beating up women and many other things.

I'll take a jouster ANYDAY over a football pansie, hoodlum, thug.

I said the *bulk* of the work, not all of it. That said, the sport wouldn't exist without the horse, although the idea of guys in armor couching lances just running at each other is funny, about as funny as nascar without the cars. Still, you seem to have made up your minds, especially where football is concerned.
