Embarrassingly Noob Question

Where do all you people find your spiffy icons? And how do you apply 'em to your personae so they show up next to your name on these threads? [God I hate being an old fart some days.]

click my account above the message board

go there and click message board settings,

then just click change on avatar image and pick from the massive array of avatars

First, you must bathe in a barrel of fresh eel eyes at midnight, under a full moon.....

In all seriousness tho, you click on My Account. Look for the panel labeled messageboard settings. At the top right of that panel, click "EDIT". You then get a list of all the fun things you can do (select a faction symbol to display, set your timezone, create aliases) and more importantly, you can choose an avatar image. An alias doesn't have to use the same avatar, and are usually named after a character. Of course, there is always the much beloved CareBaird. And "Purple Fluffy CatBunnyGnome".

So, in short: My Account --> Message Board Settings --> Change Avatar Image.
