Bestial Simple Template (Tide of Twilight spoilers)

In The Society Scenario "Tide of Twilight" I see this wonder affliction happen to the PC's as the venture deeper into the forest, but I have one simple question about this "Bestial Simple Template". That is can they still use their weapons and shields and cast spells? I see where they gain a bit and two claw attacks. I also see where it gives examples of the types of animals they "hybid-form" to, but I want to know it they still could use their standard equipment.

Just FYI, you should include a "SPOILER" warning in your topic title so no one reads these spoilers by accident :)

The template does not remove any feats such as weapon or armor proficiency, nor does it inhibit spellcasting unless the caster's primary ability score drops below the minimum needed to cast their spells. Remind the players that the template is as much a role-playing tool as a mechanical one. I would consider it more fun to act like a beast (use natural attacks rather than weapons) rather than just play my PC with some stat adjustments.

Thank you very much. In the future I will remember to add the Spolier alert.

Doug's ruling matches my intent as author exactly. You gain claws, but could still wrap your hands around a sword if you'd prefer (or cast a spell, or do anything else you could otherwise do). I've had several players understand they can use their weapons, but for roleplaying reasons prefer to use their new natural attacks.

It was kind of funny in the last game of it I ran. The only two that made their saves were the two that were immune to the effect, druid and ranger.

Actually, in the game I played it in, the only ones who missed their save were the ranger and barbarian, and they played it up, but the ranger was a natural weapon ranger, and I think the barbarian used some sort of unarmed variant, so they just became even nastier than they started out.

It was sort of, "Ooooo. More natural attacks!"

I played a Witch through this at level 1. I was the only PC affected by the effect.

The GM described the feeling as "giving into your animal instincts" and "you feel as though raw flesh would be particularly tasty".

So I stopped using hexes and ran headfirst into combat with the front-lining Paladin.

It was something that as a player I found to be quite enjoyable and everyone else at the table laughed when the witch ran up to someone with a bite and then followed it up with claw-claw-bite next round.

I was very glad that my first feat was toughness, because I don't think I would have been as spirited otherwise.

Question regarding who is and is affected. Are kitsune, nagaji, and tenge affected? They're already bestial. Or would you just give them a +2 against the change? Maybe +4 for the kitsune since it's already a shapechanger.
Also, what happens to those who already have bite and claws? Do they go up a size category? They should go down or really stay the same.
