I am looking at a slight modification to the fly skill.
RAW says If a creature with wings takes damage while flying it must make a DC 10 skill check or fall 10 feet.
I think that this rule is too simple. the rule is too easily negated by basic fly bonuses such as size, fly rating and the fact that flight is usually treated as a class skill. even if the skill is NOT negated the 10 foot drop is next to meaningless.
I propose the following
A creature that takes damage in flight must make a skill check equal to 10 + damage received or fall. The distance fallen is equal to twice the amount by which the flyer failed the check rounded up to the next 5.
in other words if a flying creature is hit for 25 damage it makes a DC 35 skill check or fall. if the creature fails the check with a total role of say 26 it must fall 20 feet (18 rounded up to 20)
Damage is rolled against all damage delt by a single action. in other words a creature hit by a multishot attack combines all of the damage from both arrows to make the skill check. a creature hit by multiple arrows from a rapid shooting opponent makes a skill check vs each individual hit. a creature hit by multiple magic missiles from a single casting makes 1 skill check against the combined damage.
what do you think of this modification to the skill.
is the fail penalty to high? Is the system to complex? any suggestions?
