Varisian Food

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Apart from the recipe that appears in Edge of Anarchy, what else do we know about the diet and cooking styles of Varisian Varisians (as opposed to Varisians from elsewhere)?

I'm thinking there would be a lot of simple ingredients thrown together and spiced, and/or eastern European/Mediterranean (Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine, Romania) cuisine.

That's actually about spot on, but with a significant amount of sea food in there as well.

Scarab Sages

Seafood only if they are on a body of water or big river. There is a lot of inland space in Varisia, where I doubt fresh fish can be found.

There may have been some recipes in the early Wayfinders. I don't think they do recipes anymore, but I do recall some.

YAY! Thanks, JJ. My group is starting Jade Regent this weekend and I want to give them an immersive experience of the different cultures they encounter. I may even go so far as to make them some food myself.

There's a lot of inland space in Varisia, for sure, but that doesn't mean that's where the Varisians traditionally travel. In fact, they generally follow rivers and the coastline. They generally do NOT go up into the northeastern half of the region at all.

In other words, seafood and fish is never far from a Varisian travel route.

Only because nobody's submitted them!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This is exactly the kind of detail that I loved getting from the "Volo's Guide to..." books back in the day.

When my players ask for a type of cuisine for an area, I generally pick a real world ethnic cuisine that isn't that well known. After looking at the one Varisian recipe, I decided that for cuisine, all Romany recipes were fair game for Sczarni recipes, but in general Varisia was Dalmatia. That lets you quickly decide all sorts of exotic dishes without having to invent them all yourself.

So is this recipe something you can really make at home and be good?

It's spicy chickpea simmer. I made it once and it was a little bland but that may well be my fault rather than the recipe. If I made it again, I'd definitely spicy things up quite a bit more.
