Call of Cthulhu

Other RPGs

I have a few questions about CoC.

I've heard that players shouldn't expect to live very long. I picture "campaigns" being a series of one shot adventures. Is that typical, or am I off base?

Also, I picked up but have never played the d20 edition. Which versions have the best rulesets? Which editions have the most published adventures?

Also, are there other RPGs/settings that are very similar to CoC?

Thanks!

Character lifespan is really based on the GM and the playstyle, although if they aren't killed off the do tend to slowly (or sometimes quickly) go irrevocably insane.

Chaosium's BRP version of the game easily has the most published material. The most recent edition is 6th edition...but the differences between editions are fairly minor.

If you mean game mechanics, then some similar RPGs are Chaosiums Basic Roleplaying, RuneQuest, Mongoose's Legend, and anything else based on the BRP/d100 engine. So, there's quite a lot. If you mean the same subject matter, your best bet is Trail of Cthulhu.

Settings that are similar are also rather abundant, as most major roleplaying systems have put out some sort of Mythos supplement. Savage World has Realms of Cthulhu, and True20 has Shadows of Cthulhu.
