What's in a name?

Gamer Life General Discussion

Tonight, my group is in Rolgrimmdur and starting to unravel the mystery of exactly why Hayla Sagginsdottir is acting so strangely.

They have begun referring to her as:

Hayla Carl Sagan's Daughter

...

Do you or your players have any pet names for NPCs in your campaigns?

My players do this relentlessly. In Second Darkness they called Shalelu "Shaniqia" thanks to one player not paying attention, and Kaershiel got renamed to "CoCo" just to piss him off. In my homebrews they have messed up names for people too. Weirdly, the nicknames actually seem to help them remember the real names when hey try to so I don't mind it much.

In my old Red Hand of Doom campaign, my players referred to Captain Soranna Anitah as either 'Sah-nit-ah Ah-na' or 'capable swordswoman'.

In our current Savage Tide game, they refer to one of the NPCs they are chasing as 'Igloo' (Vanthus has been recast as a young elven noble named Aeglîn).

Lastly in my Serpent's Skull PbP, most of the PCs have nicknames for the NPCs and vice-versa. Alissariel becomes either Alis, 'Lis, or Lissi, Lureene becomes El or Ellie, and Sasha in particular comes up with interesting ways of mispronouncing people's names when she inevitably mishears them or just plain decides she doesn't like someone enough yet to say it right. Prince Tyralor = Tearylord or Prince Guy, Princess Alis = Princess T1ts or Your Highnessness, etc.

Great fun all around.

Not really a pet name, but this one was a bit amusing...

My players wanted to know the name of the tailor they were visiting. Put on the spot the first name I thought of was Taylor. I had the NPC sigh heavily when the party asked his name, to show that the NPC didn't find it funny.

Of course the paladin has to try to circumvent making the poor chap uncomfortable by offering to use his last name instead. The NPC begins to weep quietly as his head drops into his hands "Tailor." The poor man had a rough childhood because of that.

Thus "Taylor Tailor, the tailor" became a running gag. Anytime my group goes to a tailor from now on, that will be his/her name.

The most recent one in my campaigns was Shami-Amourae, whom the players refered to as Sham-Wow.

I'm looking forward to running a game in the Land of the Linnorm Kings, just so they can bump into Imavajana.

I can usually never remember the best stories, but one thing I do recall was my adventurers going through a tower built by a mage named Sarothane, and the players started singing, "Sarothane, Mr. Sarothane, shoulda been my name, Mr. Sarothane..."

There's also times when I've either lost my notes, my random name generator, or both, and the PCs decide to visit some person I hadn't planned on them visiting, so we've ended up with NPCs like "Frank and Moondancer, the Dreamspeakers," and "Steve the Wizard." Who of course the PCs decide to visit most often and become actual fleshed out NPCs, whereas the NPCs I wrote ahead of time never see the light of day. Poor Rowan Black gets ignored, but good old Wizard Steve, he's the party's best friend...

Another one I just remembered from earlier in the campaign.

Codwin I of Augustana was called:

Sir Codpiece the First

... although never to his face.

These are funny although I have not had this happen.
