the pharasmin penitence as background for pc class monks?

Carrion Crown

i remember reading that monks most certainly come from other lands rather then ustalav in the players guide to carrion crown, then i saw an entry in rule of fear regarding monks in the pharasmin penitence. are they talking about pc class monks? and if not, how bad would it upset theme or the game if it was tweaked to allow for pc class monks to come from that order?

No upset at all. Most PC monks are going to come from outside Ustalav simply because most of Golarion is outside Ustalav.

The term 'monks' doesn't necessarily mean PC monks, that's true, but there's no reason why you or your GM couldn't just say "and the monastic order has fighty monks".

Sovereign Court

I dont think its a problem as ANebulousMistress said that it would work but I'd re read the write up on Pharasma in the Second AP of Carrion Crown. Most of the people who live in Ustalav believe in the concept of Pharasmin Penitence. Its the idea that you must balance your actions by pain and the trials of life add certain weight to ones soul when judged by The Lady of Graves. Yep that means self abuse...religious style. page 66 of The Trail of the Beast.

thank you both for your replies, there was also some information for the pharasmin penitence in Rule of Fear.
of course when i read it there it had little to differ from the write up in trail of the beast, the depravation of sight and hearing seemed less permanent in Rule of Fear.

i admit when i first read this, i scanned over monks and couldn't help to have my mind go to every poorly done martial art training montage done in films.
then i made the connection of what could happen to a group of holy warriors deprived of the "easy things" in life, say access to standard martial training and spells? they would have to adapt. training by virtue, is never easy.
it somehow brought purpose to the actions more so then "spiritual insurance"

i chuckled at the vague connection even as far as the crafty albino in angels and demons, where he whipped, and abused himelf for faith but was resourseful none the less.
