Dear everyone,

It has recently been brought to my attention that I am more known for the things I hate than anything else. It has lead many to believe that there is nothing more to me than my vast, vast stores of Haterade(tm) and maybe a few captured clones running around the place. This is untrue, however- I have so much love to give! Therefore, I have decided to make this thread. Every day between now and the 21st(whichi s my birthday, I originally planned to post this yesterday but I had work), I will post a short soliloquy about something I love!

Day 1- Wine

Despite being a consumer and purveyor of Haterade(tm), I do enjoy the occasional *ahem* adult beverage. While I do enjoy wine in both the red and white variety, my personal favorite is something I made myself years ago while living with my roomies. Here is the recipe...

1941(Like the video game!)

1 part soy milk(vanilla or unflavored)
1 part seltzer
1/4 to 1/2 part Jack Daniels(stuff can be strong and throw off the flavor)
A goodly amount of caramel syrup(as much as you like, be careful not to oversweeten)
Mix with a hand blender and you're done!

Next up: Women

Day 2(to catch up)- Women

While I do indeed love women, this thread isn't about my sexual preferences and proclivities. Instead, I will talk about my love for women in gaming. As some of you may already know, I do my best to keep at least one all-female gaming group going, and I am currently preparing for yet another game this Sunday. I feel it is very important to increase the amount of women in gaming, and make the ones already there feel comfortable- many female gamers I have met have stated they feel more comfortable gaming with at least one more woman around the table. The game I have going now is a Darklight Sisterhood game, both all-female and a non-good game to boot. I do hope Paizo puts out a non-good adventure path sometime soon, but that's another story. I do love seeing a wider variety of faces around the game table- not just in race, but in sex as well.

Does this thread end with FHDM sitting on Joss Whedon's lap and asking for one of Alton Brown's books for Christmas?

I wonder if hating stuff will be on the list.

I am not sure, but I do know that if my wife were to post something this, that is exactly how it end. To true it is scary.

Freehold I would like to share a quote from the "Wrath of Khan" here.

"From hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hates' sake, I spit my last breath at thee!"

.

.

Oh wait that's not the right quote, here it is.

"I have been, and always shall be, your friend."

And you will always be mine. However, that was a quote from the new Star Trek movie, which is kickass beyond all reasonable definition of the word kickass.

Day 3- Song

I don't think I know anyone who is phonophobic or anything like that. I truly love music in every shape and form. American(and Japanese)80's, Lady Gaga, Public Enemy, Saving Abel, The Lonely Island, The Shapeshifters, Morning Musume, Akina Nakamori, Evanescence, RIP SLYME, god alone knows how many movie scores and soundtracks, not to mention the various instrumentals I use in game from the good people at Sonic Legends...you name it, I probably like it, can understand others liking it, or have heard of it. About the only thing I don't like is gangsta rap and that's because of the role it played in killing off "true" rap and politically oriented stuff. Oops, I'm going into "stuff I don't like" territory- I've got to keep this thread positive! As an aside, I also don't understand why people feel the need to beat the crap out of/hate on people who like music groups or individuals they don't like(and yes, this is me talking here). Tastes vary.

Nowadays I just favorite stuff on url=[http://www.slacker.com]Slacker[/url] and let the service make choices for me based on stuff I like, but I occasionally pop in a CD(remember those?) and listen to music on the old Panasonic(remember them? Oh wait, they're still around, n/m). I've also got a plethora of old mp3s snagged from Napster(remember them!?!?) back in the day before they sold out. But enough nostalgia- on to a brief playlist!

Evanescence(soooooooooo hot in the video)- Call Me When You're Sober
Adele(also hot in the video)- Rolling in the Deep
Akina Nakamori- 1/2 No shinwa, Kita Wing, Southern Wind
Billy Idol- Cradle of Love
Black Eyed Peas- Pump It
Britney Spears- If You Seek Amy(man...that was dark).
Christina Aguilera- Not Myself Tonight, Dirrty, Candyman
Dangaio- CROSS FIGHT!!!!!
Deee-Lite- Groove Is In The Heart
Depeche Mode- Enjoy the Silence, Just Can't Get Enough, Master and Servant, People are People
Five Spirits- Hop Step Jump
Freezepop- Less Talk More Rokk
Gwen Stefani- Hollaback Girl, The Greatest Escape
Ichiro Suzuki- Gatchaman 94 ending song
Jesus Jones- Real Real Real
Jet Set Radio- Pretty much the whole soundtrack, but especially Humming the Baseline, Super Brothers(Guitar Vader), Let Mom Sleep
Katy Perry- ET
Kid Rock- Bawitaba, Cowboy
Kelly Clarkson- Already Gone
Kinki Kids- Just about anything
Lady Gaga(smooooookin' hot)- Christmas Tree, Bad Romance, I Like It Rough, Telephone, Starstruck
Lenny Kravitz- Lady
Lynyrd Skynyrd- Freebird(yes. Freebird.)
Maroon 5- Give A Little More
Maya Sakamoto- Triangler
May'n- Northern Cross, Lion
MCAT- Bomb-A-Head!!!
Megumi Hayashibara- Just about everything she has ever made!!!!
Micheal Jackson- Do you really have to ask?
Morning Musume- Almost everything
Owl City- Fireflies
Okami- Pretty much the entire soundtrack, but especially Red Helmet's Destruction
Pink- Most Girls, Raise Your Glass
Public Enemy- 911 is A Joke, Don't Believe The Hype, Self Destruction, I Don't Wanna Be Called (Yo N~@@&)
Puffy AmiYumi- Almost everything
Queen- Killer Queen
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Love Rollercoaster
RIP SLYME- Super Shooter
Rockman X- Get Through The Dark Arrange Version (The Official FHDM Theme Music)
Savage Garden- Truly Madly Deeply, I Want You
Saving Abel- Addicted
Space Channel 5- The entire soundtrack, but especially the opening and the fight with Coco Tapioca
Sting- Brand New Day
Superchick- Anthem, One Girl Revolution(from the SLAI soundtrack specifically)
Toshinori Yonekura- Monochrome Trouble
The Lonely Island- I'm on a Boat, I Just Had Sex, Santana DVX
The Shapeshifters- Lola's Theme
Tomoyasu Hotei- Battle Without Honor Or Humanity, Kill the Target, Katana Groove,
Yoko Kanno- Almost everything, but especially Idol Talk

And this barely scratches the surface, ladies and gentlemen.

Next up- Gaming

Fine. I'll roll for you.
1d20 - 42 ⇒ (11) - 42 = -31

why 42? That's how many years I've been around since the day I actually was born yesterday.

And his list has no Johnny Cash... WTF is up with that!?

Don't you hate getting older?

There's way too much pop on that playlist for this to be the real FHDM. I'm calling shenanigans.

Day 4- Gaming

It should come as a no surprise to that I enjoy tabletop gaming. Whether it's "D&D", Pathfinder, White Wolf, Marvel Super Heroes or Star Wars(d6, not d20), I enjoy all the games you can't win, and not a few of the ones you can, such as board games like Hero Quest and card games like Cards Against Humanity. I'm also a big fan of video games. While the bloom is off the rose for me with respect to the vast majority of first person shooters(although I enjoy games that put a weird spin on it, like Left 4 Dead, or have a compelling story, like the Call of Duty series), I greatly enjoy games that you have to drop a quarter in for. Not just fighters(although I am on the SNK side of the Capcom/SNK war and am a BIG fan of KOF; my favorite characters are Vice, Mature, Shermie and Ralf) but side scrolling beat 'em ups(Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow over Mystara and Alien Vs. Predator 4 LIFE!!!!!!!) and shooters(RAIDEN III!!!!!). Sit-down simulators are pricey as hell but also something I love- I spent an ungodly amount of money at the arcade for Virtual-On and was ecstatic when I could play Mechwarrior 2 on a LAN network at Neutral Ground. A part of me died when the arcade in Chinatown closed down, ditto Neutral Ground. While I can play these games at home, it's just not the same.

I also love games from Japan that just aren't popular here. Super Robot Wars is a particular favorite, as are other turn-based strategy RPGs. I'd be lying if I said I didn't also love eroge- adult dating simulations. Bible Black and other games from ACTIVE are the reigning champions in my book, but there are other games that are just as good- Family Project, Yukkuri, etc. Things have changed from when I was younger, and now purchasing a japanese game console is a (remotely) affordable, but I still can't wait for the day that consoles are region free.

I'm also very much into retro gaming. Usually emulations help here, but let's face it- there's nothing like the feeling of an actual original controller in your hand hooked up to a television. Shadowrun and Target Earth are among my favorite games for the Genesis; Armored Warriors, Dragon Ball Z, Ranma 1/2 and 7th Saga are among my favorites for Super Nintendo...You know what? Let's not do this piecemeal...

The pod you climbed in and closed the door? It shook when you walked, jump jetted, and were shot? I loved playing on that thing. A sports bar in Sacramento had 8 pods networked together. I was ranked 6th in kill/death ratio and sadly my grandmother (a pilot) was the top ranked player there.

When the place went out of business, a friend of mine bought the system. He currently has 4 pods set up in his house (rest gathering dust in the garage) and still plays on a regular basis. Sadly, he lives too far away to visit often.

that's awesome, that your grandmother played. But i am talking about playing mw2 over a series of connected computers specifically. I have played the vibro pods, but it was more target practice tthan a mission.

I never had a chance to play MW2 on a LAN. I did play online at the time and even with the delay, was alot of fun. Play MW, MW 3, and MW4 and none were as good as 2

Mech Commander 2 was really good as well. Much better than the first.

I just wish they would make more good mech games! I like the customization and balance that MW2 and Commander 2 had. PlusMech Commander 2 was pretty dang hard for me.

i greatly prefer mw3, but I seem to be alone in that. I Mc2 was fun and had great acting, but the difficulty was too swingy. I would have liked to be able to field tanks and infantry, as well as attack helos.

I still expect some day a mechwarrior mmo. So many good things could be done, and then you get a mech!

(Gotta catch up, it's been a really crazy week)

Day 5- Animation

It's no secret that I like Japanese animation. I am otaku, and I have been from before before the term came to be viewed in a negative sense, and certainly longer than the term weeaboo has been around. I cut my teeth on Gigantor, Mazinger Z, Voltron and (sigh) Robotech. I prefer my anime as close to the original artist's view as possible, without the interference of occasionally well-meaning censors and companies seeking to alter something to meet American sensibilites- in my view, author is trying to tell a story, and the less voices in that particular choir, the clearer song. In the same vein, I greatly prefer subtitles to dubbing. This is particularly because the language can be subtle at times, and while english isn't without it's peculiarities, I find that even the most well meaning and dedicated translations into verbal english miss things that subtitles don't. Not to mention the fact that most seiyuu have been around for years upon years longer than their American counterparts and have raised voice acting to an art form that I find has been forgotten in this country by all but old school radio show enthusiasts. Maybe this will change one day, but I doubt it.

This isn't to say that I am a complete snob that avoids american stuff like the plague. While I love japanese culture(a topic for another day, perhaps), I love american stuff too. I remember and long for the "Golden Age" of Afterschool/Saturday/Sunday Morning Cartoons. Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes made me laugh until it literally hurt- and these were the episodes that retained the cartoon violence that seems to have been edited out from future editions. I LOVED the 80's stuff that was "inspired by" (read: edited/stolen from or done by) Japanese work like Transformers, Real Ghostbusters(first few seasons anyway), Dungeons and Dragons(I also don't hate on the characters as much as others seem to- what would YOU do if you got on a roller coaster and ended up in Mystara being laughed at by a sadistic gnome Dungeon Master?), Pirates of Dark Water, Centurions, and Thundercats. I even love the unusual stuff that people don't seem to remember- Bigfoot and the Muscle Machines, Jem(which has undergone a recent resurgence in popularity), Robotix, Tigersharks, Inhumanoids, and Bionic Six. I loved the 90's too, primarily because that seemed to be the time period American stuff started to stand on its own. Sure, there's the Simpsons(which lead to everything else from Futurama to American Dad), but there's also stuff like Tiny Toons(which lead to Animaniacs!), The Super Mario Brothers Power Hour, Captain N The Game Master, Batman TAS(and Superman and Justice League and Young Justice, etc...), Conan The Adventurer, Exosquad(How do YOU like it when someone steals from you, HARMONY GOLD!!!!!)...the list goes on and on. 2k deserves special recognition because it was very much the age of Cartoon Network and the things they brought us, such as Powerpuff Girls(which my wife loves and uses against me when I say I don't want any daughters), Dexter's Laboratory, Grim and Evil and the kernel of all the other stuff they bring us today, like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ben 10 and Generator Rex.

I struggled to write this snippet on things I love because it's so hard to explain without sounding like a confused zealot. Animation has been there for me longer than even tabletop gaming has, and it certainly has been the golden thread in my life sewing many disparate interests into my humble life. Here's a list of the things on my DVR or on my DVD shelf- you'll see that I enjoy things from everywhere.

Mobile Suit Gundam(Must be mentioned first. I own numerous incarnations of the original UC universe stuff and disdain all others. I met Yoshiuki Tomino twice, and I also own the original novel. My love for true Gundam is such that it must be given it's own topic another day).
Excel Saga
Iczer Reborn(I loves me some gynoids)
Gall Force(the entire series save Ten Little Gall Force, which is incredibly hard to find. I also love the work of Kenichi Sonoda, which will become evident)
Adventures of the Mini Goddesses
Cowboy Bebop(and the movie)
Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crash(original only. I refuse to acknowledge the newer version)
Neon Genesis Evangelion(original series and you can NOT advance)
Devil Hunter Yohko(one of my inspirations for hating the work of Joss Whedon...but this thread is not about hate, forget I said that!!!)
Ghost Sweeper Mikami(see above)
Revolutionary Girl Utena(entire series save for the movie, which gave me a headache)
DNA2
Ys(Book 1 and 2 and Castle in the Heavens)
Sorcerer Hunters(original series and OVA)
Justice League(entire series)
Cutey Honey(new Ova Series- the true genius of Go Nagai cannot be denied!!!)
The Guyver(original series only. This series has the distinction of being the ONLY anime for which I genuinely enjoyed the dubbed track- it was a combination of cheese and seriousness that lent much to the work)
Geo Armor Kishin Corps
Maze(DVD and OVA)
Kino's Journey
Dai Guard
Now and Then, Here and There(do not watch this if you want to sleep)
Big O
Ad Police Files
Golden Boy(ecchi AND cycling!!!!)
Project A-ko(all three movies)
Macross, Southern Cross, Genesis Climber Mospeada(must mention all three of these together, as they were chopped up and edited and strung together to create three seasons of Robotech)
Macross Plus
High School of the Dead
The Weathering Continent
Family Guy Seasons 1-6
The Venus Wars(an excellent example of how dubbing can completely alter a storyline and why I avoid it)
Godannar(special mention must be made here of my love for Dangaio, the spiritual predecessor to this series. If anyone knows where I can get Dangaio on DVD[The ORIGINAL, not the dubbed "movie"], I will be eternally greatful. I love Dangaio with a passion that threatens to overtake my love for Gundam. I also must mention that I am looking for Genesis Survivor Gairaith on DVD.)
Air Gear
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro Chan(an interesting look at the Japanese view of American cartoon violence and other things like South Park)
Louie the Rune Soldier
Record of Lodoss War(mentioned with Rune Soldier because these two series actually take place in the same world and are rumored to be the directors 2nd ed Dungeons and Dragons games)
Berzerk
Bastard(I will never forgive Viz for not bringing out the rest of the Bastard manga. Never.)
Star Ocean EX
Paranoia Agent
Powerpuff Girls(Complete series)
Macross Frontier(mentioned separately from Macross series above even though it's part of the world)
Hell Girl (season 1 and 2, hope to get season 3 soon)
Black Lagoon(when I get back in shape, the resemblance between Dutch and myself will be uncanny)
Gantz
Macross: Do you remember love(mentioned separately because this was the first anime I actually "owned")
Gunslinger Girl
Mazinkaiser(GO NAGAI!!!!!!!)
Princess Resurrection(my wife's favorite series)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Megazone 23(all three movies)
Robotech: The Macross Saga(mentioned separately out of respect- as much as I loved Voltron and other series, it was my physical search for Robotech that brought me into my circle of friends and resulted in me actually getting into tabletop gaming).

Next up: The written word

Day 6- The Written Word

No long preamble this time. It should be a no-brainer that I enjoy reading- this is a website dedicated to a game that relies heavily on reading comprehension and the like.

The first fantasy novel I ever read was either Blade of the Poisoner or Master of Fiends. I hope to own both of them one day, as they were the gateway to the Dragonlance novels for me, which I discovered around the same time I found out about Choose Your Own Adventure and Lone Wolf. These works soon lead to me Thieves World(it made no sense that Thieves World was in the kids section...), which lead to Sword And Sorceress. The various authors of Sword and Sorceress lead me into a love affair with short stories, which I thought about writing for a living back in college, though a vicious argument with my mother put an end to that.

I love novels and short fiction as well. I've read King, Jordan, Martin, Sanderson...the lot of 'em. I also love the work of Paul S. Kemp and Richard Lee Byers- their work in the world of Faerun are the only thing keeping me from Haterating(tm) the setting from orbit- not that the other short stories in the various Forgotten Realms anthologies aren't without merit.

I love comic books as well, but they play such a specific role in my life that I think it would be unfair to not give them their own space. For now, here's another rundown of what I've got on my shelf and may indeed still be looking for.

Dungeon and Dragon magazine- special mention for obvious reasons. LONG LIVE PAIZO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sword And Sorceress- still collecting. Need to fill holes in my collection as well as keep up with the new stuff- I heard another anthology was recently published. My favorite story was "Hands" by Louise Tilton, I believe. I also loved the stories in the world of the dancing sword mistress, the other group of stories(or maybe it was just one) where a woman had a sister who was developmentally disabled but a champion priestess-dance bard or something, and yet another story where there was a magic school where everyone had to choose their specialty school.

Shadowrun- LOVE the setting through 3rd edition. I have a healthy amount of books, but I'm missing more than a few. I love the work of Mel Odom, the late Nigel Findley, and Jak Koke.

A Song of Ice And Fire- Should need no introduction. Also have both versions of the RPG.

Hot Blood Anthology- I truly love erotic horror, but it's so hard to get right. This series came out in the early 90s and was well and truly amazing, the right mix of blood, gore, the supernatural/fantastic, and erotica.

Thieves World- Mentioned above already, but I own just about everything save a book here or there. LOVE the series, although like most fans I recognize the world was weirder when there were strange gods on the street attempting to shank one another while the world melted around them. And let's not get into the ridiculously overpowered magic items...

Prism Pentad by Troy Denning- I truly love the world of Athas, and this was an excellent introduction. I didnt know squat about the rules of D&D at the time, much less psionics, but I was hooked by the time I was halfway through the first book.

The Taladas Trilogy by Pierson- My love for Dragonlance isn't restricted to just one continent. I loved the Taladas trilogy and would love to play in that setting. I truly felt for the characters in their trials and tribulations and even though I know the rules better than the first time I read Time of the Twins(my first entry into the world of TSR- remember them?), I felt that the action flowed too smoothly to be properly reflected by dice.

And that's just what's at the forefront of my SHORT bookcase.
