I noticed it earlier, but I couldn't tell if it was a new addition or if it occurred earlier in the month without me noticing.

It's a side effect of a change we made for something else that we haven't entirely decided we like or not but we were generally happy about for now. It makes for an interestingly hypnotic effect. I wonder if I can get them to pulsate...

The many shades of gray.

I'm not seeing what I'm probably supposed to be seeing.. The entire quote box is equally gray to me, apart from the single white line at the top (using IE8 on XP).

Your browser is probably caching the old style sheet.

Or IE8 doesn't support alpha channel colors, in which case it will fallback on the old style.

We rolled out a bunch of changes to the site today. This is one that we will probably be changing, not sure I like it just yet.

Shadow Lodge

I like it, makes it much easier to see the quote inside the quote. There are some threads where this gets quite confusing at times.

Please, please keep it. The big, grey field is no help when looking at nested quotes. This is much better.

It's pretty. And serves a useful purpose. [/my 2cp]

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!! The horror!! THE HORROR OF TEH NEW!!!!

Heh, had to disable Stylish before I could see what the fuss was about. One thing that I think would improve the readability of posts even more (esp those that start with quotes or bullet lists) would be if the text area for the post content didn't have to wrap around the avatar images. I frequently find myself needing to add 4 or 5 lines with just a dot at the start in order to avoid any weird text-wrapping issues.

Yay shading!

I will agree that it's not perfect - the outermost layer is too light, and it gets a little weird if you're quoting a lot of small text (as above). However, I love the idea. Definitely keep something like it, even if you don't keep this exact implementation.

I like it very much.

I just had a problem a few days ago trying to determine where one nested quote ended and the reply began.

I also like that it seems to support a pretty deep nesting effect. Before didn't it only go three or four deep?

It's like staring down the well of time.

vertigoooooooooooooooooooo!

I think the side margins are a bit too wide.

I'm thinking that too. And I'm also wondering what happens if we extend the background to the padding box.

Edit: We'd actually have to get rid of all of the padding for that to work.

So we played with the padding a little and bottomed it out after 8 quotes. We've also given the start of the quote a little line to delineate the quote a bit more.

Very nice.

Until I saw it, I never realized that I needed it. It makes nested quotes so much clearer.

I kindof miss the perpetually-darker effect my post had, but I'm totally in agreement that 8 quotes is more than enough depth for any normal usage. I think it looks great!

I definitely like the starting line too.

Yay happy accidents, and yay Lissa!

Scarab Sages Reaper Miniatures

I like it - the older way made it confusing to tell which quote ended where.

I don't think the bottom line of the most recent quote is crisp enough. It's still hard to tell at a glance where the last quote ends and the main message text begins.

I get to see it both ways. At work, IE7 defaults to the old style. At home, Safari gives me all the new Paizo bling.

I really wish I could make some of the cooler stuff work for IE, but it just doesn't right now. IE9 will fix some of that but I think they took a stand to not support in any way standards that weren't chiseled into stone yet.

We did darken the first one quite a bit. It's much closer to the original text color. If it's not distinct, I'd look at your gamma/contrast etc. But the lines are not set in stone yet either. We may darken them as we go. I had them pretty dark to start but it was kind of alarming and felt halting. This version feels like it gives it a good amount of enclosure without saying, "Stop! Your done with this quote! Oh, wait, no that's another quote." But we'll see.

I especially feel sad that the liquid column layout on the indexes in the prd don't work for IE. That really feels a lot better, more organized, and I can basically choose how much information I want to deal with at a time.
