WOW! That is fantastic! How long did it take?
5 min 0.3 Sec for the entrance hall stop to finish :) just timed it.
Okay - this assumes a good storage system of your pieces and that you know what you build. I probably would have answered 10-15 minutes - but I wanted to rebuild this part anyhow as I want to paint the board and attach some wood strips around to ensure the pieces can't slide. But I didn't cheat and took any pieces out of my storage or took out the right boxes. Some of the stickers have pealed off and I probably lost half a minute locating the right box with the wall pieces.
So once you know what you want to build, DF is fast enough to use during the game - provided you have your pieces well organised. This is what I do in my home games. It is only marginally slower as drawing on a battle map and you save this time again later as it saves you a lot for descriptions.
I would not recommend this at conventions though. I did so at PaizoCon UK 2010. It worked fine during the games - but it tends to take longer to store pieces away properly again - resulting in me spending the little bit of downtime between sessions on the gaming table storing stuff to get the table free for the next game.
This is the reason I started in January for Conception to make boards that have a full layout on them and I just need to drop them on the table and I'm ready to go. Or more importantly - I can take them off the table as fast as well.
Off course - doing the 'perfect' layout can take a lot longer when you try several ones - change pieces or even change from one set - Realm of the Ancients - to a different one - in this case the Classic DF line. So I guess the initial layout (not including painting the board or nailing down strips of wood) was probably 2 hours.
I probably should also add as disclaimer that I'm currently in the business to set up my own company - Thod's Bazaar and that I have ordered a whole container load of DF for the European Market. Six years without a European distribution was just too long. So you are likely to see more PFS layouts from me in the future.
And just in case someone asks - I did talk to Mark Moreland (who send me to Jeff Alvarez) at GenCon that I'm not stepping on Paizo's toes when I use DF layouts in the future at conventions not only to advertise Pathfinder but also my own business.
In the end it s the gamer who wins by playing in a gorgeous layout.
