Dragonrider Miniature Options

Miniatures

I am playing the third party Super Genius Games class the Dragonrider in an upcoming campaign. I've chosen the gold dragon as my steed, so it is starting as a large creature. For when I'm not mounted, I've picked this mini as my character, but the majority of the time I will be on the dragon. A mounted character on a dragon is far too much to hope for, and most (all?) of the gold dragon miniatures seem to be pretty rare.

So, my options. I'm going to default to printing out a token, but that's not as impressive as rolling out a large miniature for combat. Are there some other attached wing dragon minis that are less rare, for repainting? Is there some obtainable gold dragon mini? Worst case, anyone know of a nice token image?

Well, not entirely sure if its what you're looking for, but D&D minis had a githyanki knight riding a large red dragon.

While not cheep, Games Workshop makes a number of dragons with riders.

Quality minis, but a bit overpriced...

If you want a pewter mounted figure, what I would suggest is first ordering the rider from this Reaper mini set:

http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/female%20elf%20bow/sku-down/14375

If you scroll down on the linked page, you will see the header "the Boneyard" and see where you can just order the rider for $2.40.

When you order the dragon of your choice, you can then gently bend her legs so they fit over the dragon better, and/or sculpt a simple "saddle" with greenstuff so she fits on it properly.

Depending on the size, you might be able to find a toy plastic dragon that is cheaper than a pewter mini. Search this miniatures forum, there are some excellent discussions of where to find the dragon. Glue the mini to the proper size base (2 inches for Large, etc.) to make sure it fits properly on the battlegrid. You can just use something cheap like foamboard or balsawood for the base. As the dragon gets bigger, cut out a bigger base from the foamboard and glue the whole thing (including the smaller base) on top of the newer bigger base, redecorating it so it looks nice.

I would still keep the figure you ordered as well as I'm sure there are times she's going to be unmounted.

PS: Here's a Reaper plastic dragon mini you could repaint gold, although the wings make it not too ideal for mounting a figure onto it, and it's on a medium size base from the looks of it:
http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/dragon/sku-down/20029

And here's a pewter mini that would be suitable for a Large size dragon:

The nice thing is the wings come separate on that one, so if you wanted to do the mounted figure, you could get her on first, then add the wings afterward and make sure it all fits right.

And after you've leveled your character and the dragon is much bigger and you have $50 odd bucks to spare, you can always get this, swapping Kyra's lance for a bow.

Basically the questions are how much do you want to spend, and how much effort do you want to put into it (modeling and painting and such). Because there are definately options available to you but they arent all simple.

I have this piece. I used it for an NPC dragon-rider. I put a longsword from another piece on her hip, and a kite shield with an embossed dragon on the left arm.

I have pics :P

I had it painted as a bronze. The guy who painted it for me does really good work, and takes commisions.

Thank you all for the great feedback!

Wow. This is all brilliant. I'll likely end up snagging the rider and the dragon with separate wings and body. I'll hold off on the 50$ beauty until we manage to survive that long though. Slow level progression with a known deadly GM.

No more than $50, and I'm willing to assemble and (attempt to) paint it myself.

Is he willing to recover disasters after someone botches a paint job? If so I'll probably PM you in a few weeks.

I dunno.
I can post his work if you like.
I bought all my figs and had them shipped to him for painting, then he sends them to me. He's done DnD figs, warhammer figs and the Kyra for me.

EDIT: Here's the URL to the pics.

I dinnae really like the sculpt, but if you were willing to do some rebasing WizKids made some with removeable riders (see one of the riders at the top of the search.) I might even still have some in my box I could part with.
mage knight

And then, when you've levelled some more and you've got $300 to spare, you can pick up Cang the Implacable ;)
