Magic item feature. What do you think?

Homebrew and House Rules

A player of mine recently came up with this feature for his main weapon.

Sword of Morning: (+2000gp, the cost for a background)
Magic weapons sundered with this sword have half (unless you think full is good!) their GP cost applied towards gaining additional enhancement bonuses. Basically a cooler way to increase it's power instead of selling and recrafting new ones.

I suppose mathematically it works out. (the 'cost for a background' quote is the 2000 gp reward I give for a character background and description.) I'm just not feeling the love for it.

Are there any problems with this feature that I should be aware of?

First, this would be probably be more at home in the "Homebrew" forum. Not that it terribly matters, as it will be moved if it should be moved.

Now, as to the meat of it, there is no mathematical problem to this ability. I would, however, have a flavor problem. It seems kind of weird to have an ability that exists only to increase value of items the weapon smashes up. It would be like making a gun that doesn't mess up someones clothing. Might actually be useful, but seems weird.

This is really just a gut reaction, and not a mechanical problem. The idea of leaving value in the shards of a weapon isn't imbalancing or cheesy in any way. Just strikes me as odd.

Beware of the user sundering stuff other players don't want sundered. Assuming the player who wants it is nice enough to not sunder stuff that match his buddies' proficiencies until after they've been identified it should be fine.

The upside is that the user is going to be able to upgrade his weapon without downtime. Everybody else has to shop for a new weapon or commission an enchanter to upgrade. Decide how much that's worth.
