Product Discussion

First off, Happy New Year, for those who celebrate Rosh Hashanah!

October is my favorite month: Halloween! (We celebrate EVERYTHING, here). But also, Avalon Games is coming out with a ton of new stuff! Check it out!

Detectives Investigation Sourcebook
NOW IN TWO GAME SYSTEMS!
Pathfinder Version and the Open D6 Version

Everyone loves a good mystery. Detectives is the ultimate sourcebook for anyone who wants to add an extra dose of intrigue and suspense to an investigation campaign. This sourcebook is your guide to recreating the thrills and chills of your favorite cop show, detective movie, or mystery novel.

Detectives: Investigation Sourcebook gives players and GMs all the tools they need to enter into the world of twisted plots and impenetrable mysteries. Whether your game is designed as an urban crime drama, a psychological thriller, or an old-fashioned murder mystery, this book has everything you need to bring the story to life.

This sourcebook has something for everyone, whether the heroes are hardboiled investigators out looking for clues or unstoppable secret agents out to save the world. It doesn’t matter if your villain is a serial killer, a madman bent on world domination, or a dirty politician just trying to cover his tracks, this book can help you create a fast-paced adventure that keeps your players on their toes and looking over their shoulders.

Detectives helps a GM add just the right twists and turns to keep the investigators on their toes. This book contains helpful hints for dispensing clues, managing contacts and throwing the players off the trail. Do your players ever end up running in circles? This sourcebook can help you keep the game on track with ideas for adding intrigue, pacing the adventure, handling side plots, and managing tips and information. Ever feel like the players are just following a trail of breadcrumbs? Detectives can help you dish out subtle leads that keep the plot moving forward without giving away the ending.

Inside this book you will also dastardly villains that can be customized to fit any adventure. If you ever get stuck for an adventure idea, perhaps you can find randomly generated inspiration with 100 outlandish conspiracies. Need a minor bad guy in a hurry? Try the random encounter chart with more than a dozen complete NPCs. Tons of examples help illustrate the many ways that a GM can deal with the elements of an investigation campaign, such as suspense, intrigue, red herrings, and the inevitable response that comes when the characters get too close to the truth.

Detectives for Pathfinder is tweaked with skills, feats, and prestige classes perfectly suited for this type of adventure. Detectives for Open D6 offers new concepts for skills and provides character templates that are ideal for investigations. Don’t let your sleuthing character get caught off guard when it comes time for detective work.

All-Purpose Miniature Rules #1, Avalon Mini-Games #120

Part One of a Four-Part Game System!

How many times have you looked at some new figures in the store only to say, “Those are neat, but I don't play that game.” Or seen a game but not had the figures to play? Now that problem is solved. This is a game of miniatures combat that utilizes any miniatures you own.

With these rules you can recreate classic military battles, like Gettysburg and the Battle of Hastings. Or you can see what would have happened if a squad of Vietnam-Era U.S. Troops went to the Alamo and fought against the Mexicans. Or if Space Marines were helping the Greeks at Thermopylae. Anything you'd like to do is fair game.

The game itself is divided into four primary parts: Skirmish Combat, Mass Combat, Vehicles and Creatures, and Special Powers. All-Purpose Miniature Rules #1 is the first product—the skirmish rules presented here are for actions that include less than 24 figures on a side, and use primarily 25–30mm figures.

Note that you will need to buy this product, as it supplies all the basics rules and mechanics for the system as a whole.

Floor plans of castles and other location will also be available.

In addition to this detailed write-up of the hex, each issue will also focus on other aspects of the game world, its history, important people, the Magi, and gaming classes. When you add it all up, these journals take the mundane and make it magical. It is through the Journals that the Arcana game world will grow, expand, and become a living place of adventure.

QUAD
They say chess takes a day to learn and a lifetime to master. On the other hand, children have mastered the idea of playing make-believe, but it takes a lifetime to learn the rules of TRPGs.

QUAD strives for two goals: to be fairly simple and simply fair. The game is designed to be short and easy to learn, with enough possibilities to keep veteran players interested.

The character creation system is designed so you can create a detailed character quickly. It also strives to create balanced characters: there should be no ways to ‘max out’ the rules to make a character more powerful than she should be.

One inherent downside of simplicity is that realism suffers. QUAD doesn’t claim to recreate real life; it is a game designed to allow action and adventure. QUAD does make some attempts to maintain realism as a means of game balance.

How to Spice Up Combat
Combat is an integral part of most role-playing games—in many settings it is the most IMPORTANT part. Lots of RPGs have game systems almost entirely devoted to rules used for adjudicating fights; whether between individuals, vehicles, or massed armies. Many of these conflict resolution mechanics are complicated, and can take a long time to resolve at the table. This can lead to lots of downtime, as well as boredom and frustration, for players who aren't immediately involved in the action.

But even in games where combat is a relatively short and/or simple affair, it might still be a terribly dry one. A bunch of players sitting around a table calling out numbers, die roll results, and damage values—more a Bingo game than a role-playing game—with no context, flair, or narrative excitement to frame the action. ("Roll your attack." "I rolled a 16.” “You hit, roll for damage.” “An 8.” “He's wounded, but still standing. He attacks you. Roll your defense.”). This can kill a game faster than a bullet to the head.

While there are certainly players who are fine with this style of game, many more would rather have combat be more interesting and dynamic. After all, fights (whether in the real world or a fictional one) should function to get the heart pumping and the adrenaline going. It should be about SOMETHING other than killing the next roomful of nameless orcs.

With all of that in mind, this Avalon Games How To Book is intended to give gamers a variety of tools, suggestions, and examples (many of them illustrated by popular fiction) in order to make their combats more enjoyable and more meaningful; hopefully leading to a better playing experience and more fun for everyone at the table.

“It makes no difference what men think of war .… War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him.”
