Changing character backgrounds to better suit my PC.

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Greetings everyone.

I have a PC that is an Andoran and I am having problems in regards to his background. I want him to be of a farming home of which he wishs to leave for he has great wanderlust and wishes to see the world. He is forced to escape for his parents had alread predetermined his life, that being to continue working for the farm when they were to old to carry on their agricultural business.

Now this was before I read Valeros's background and annoyingly its almost exactly the same to what I had planned. Now is there a way in which to rewrite Valeros's background so as I can use the background I originally planned. I just don't want their early history to be near replica's of each other.

Any advice?

cheers.

Well, you could tweak it so that it's a moisture farm and you get your chance to go adventuring when your folks bite the dust unexpectedly...

Wait, no, that one's already taken.

Oh! Perhaps you escaped the farm not so much out of wanderlust, but because you fell in love with the lovely maiden who also works there, but you have no money for marriage, so you packed your few belongings and left to seek your fortune across the sea.

Wait, crap, that one's taken too.

Honestly, if you started as a farmer, you're bound to overlap with someone somewhere. Why?

Because farming is the most common precursor to heroics EVER.

Why rewrite? Grow a goatee and become the childhood rival of Valeros now seeking to best his exploits as you both attempt to escape your peasant's background. Perhaps that damned iconic always beat you to the girl back at the barn-dance, but you've sworn to beat him to the princess? It could work.

Well's here's the base of what I had wrote.
He was a half elf bastard adopted by a farming family of whom were infertile when his human mother died only months after his birth (She was a tavern waitress). Ever since he could walk he had an incredible wanderlust and loved to venture beyond the boundries of his home and explore the land.

As he grew he hoped to one day leave the santities of home and explore the wonders and mysteries that this world held. However his father was insistant on his duties to the farm, which caused many arguments between the two. Him arguing that what will happen to our business if you were to leave, you are our son and thus need to take over responsibility for the business when we die. Him arguing that this is my life and I want to see the world, I'm sorry if this may cause your business to cease when you pass but I will live my life how I intend. What of the right of freedom?, is that not the Andoran way of life?

Basically this is where it becomes similar to Valeros's in that his parents have duties and thus prevent him from ever realising his dream until he fled into the night, feeling guilt but also freedom.

I apologies for not editing this in my previous post but it doesn't seem to have the edit option available. Anyway here's the full background story for the character I had done.

Pharos’s birth was the result of an elven adventurer of whom shared a night of intimacy with a beautiful tavern girl. The father cowardly abandoned the girl upon knowledge of her pregnancy and knowing she would be unfit to care for a child by herself on her salary she decided to give her child up for adoption. It was to the couple Caroline and Peyton he was given to for they had always desired a child and due to infertility problems, adoption was the only option. The mother passed away only months after birth.

Pharos is a half elven born on the 12th Erastus 4667. Pharos was raised upon a farming settlement within Andoran, where he grew up listening to the tales of travelling merchants and soldiers and dreamt of a life of adventure and exploration. Though this longing only increased as he grew, his parents were insistent that he’s duties should lie with that of the agricultural life as their parents and grandparents before them had been. Pharos however would not let this hinder him for he knew the life he wanted and no matter how much his parents objected he would live it.

It was finally then he knew, upon learning that his parents, without his consent had arranged to have him wedded to a local farmer’s daughter (hence locking him into place) that they had overstepped the line. He realized now what he had to do, for it was the only option left, to flee.
So it was thus upon the night of Erastus the 5th that Pharos fled, leaving a note of goodbye upon the counter and taking with him a change of clothes, some pilfered food, and his old training sword in which to discourage any ruffians who may seek to divest him of either.

It's impossible to come up with a background that's completely original. Plenty of adventurers out there with a similar story. So what? If it works, it works. I wouldn't change a thing.
