Kansas does not have any indoeuropean roots. It is a term meaning People of the south wind. Of course, when you realize that most terms used for native tribes were derogatory it does not sound very noble after all.

Arkansas, Its name is an Algonquian name of the Quapaw Indians. No clue on the meaning.

Wichita is "raccoon-eyed"

Topeka is "Great place to grow Potatoes"

Topeka is a great place to grow potatoes. Tomatoes too, for that matter.

The Kaw River Valley is awesome for growing foodstuffs, and the various Kansa Indians knew it way before "the Man" showed up with his potatoes and tomatoes.

Actually, it's a sweepstakes to be one of 1000 people who enter a "competition" of some sort (which isn't very-well defined anywhere I can find ... you're welcome to look at the official rules here).

About the Competition:

THE COMPETITION, ALTHOUGH REFERRED TO IN THESE OFFICIAL RULES, IS SEPARATE AND DISTINCT FROM THE SWEEPSTAKES, EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT (AND ONLY TO THE EXTENT) THAT CERTAIN SWEEPSTAKES WINNERS, SUBJECT TO THESE OFFICIAL RULES, WILL BE AWARDED THE RIGHT TO ENTER THE COMPETITION. The right to enter the Competition is not a right to remain in the Competition or receive any prize awarded in the Competition. For more information, see Rule 4.

They keep saying "skills-based" so I figure they want to make sure the folks in the "Competition" (that's assuming you've already won the sweepstakes to be one of the 1000 participating) can hold their breath and move around and stuff so they aren't legally liable in the event they shoot you into space and you die from heart failure from experiencing more than 1 G acceleration.

That, or it's the beginning of the Hunger Games and they are just camouflaging the whole thing.
