A Linnorm King Conundrum

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Mellow Greetings All,

My poor search-fu this Monday morning has led me to just post and see if this question has been asked before. As is my luck with these things, I need to try and figure it out before the Land of the Linnorm Kings supplement comes out next month. ^.^

The question is basically this:
Can a non-Ulfen become a Linnorm King if he or she follows the Ulfen tradition of slaying a linnorm in single combat and brings its head through the gates of a city that has no king (like Trollheim, for example)?

I know I can tweak this to personal taste, but I would be interested in a 'canonical' answer, if one is available.

Many thanks, as always for any help with this.

My first impulse would be to let the DM decide. But I don't have a clue if it's been published anywhere.

I would say yes but also have it be contentious and controversial. There are those who don't believe an Outsider should rule, despite their following through with tradition. I'd definitely make it something that would take a lot of time to solve in-game.

But again I have no real knowledge or authority on this subject ;)

Well ... there is some stated controversy with White Estrid's approach to the matter, so it could be that there is a fair amount of conservative resistance to the idea of anyone not-Ulfen leading the Ulfen. Especially if they do it in a non-Ulfen way.

Although, thanks to the other threads going on recently, you have given me the notion of a Hellknight or Chelaxian general venturing into the north in order to "subdue" the barbarians of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings by making himself their new king. Could make an interesting AP, likely something that would end with assassination attempts or a great war. Does seem like the sort of thing Cheliax might like to do, though.

Many thanks for the input, folks. :)

I'm all for their being resistance to the idea because of the roleplay potential - my main concern is if a non-Ulfen achieving this would even be acknowledged by the Ulfen population as legitimate.

The character would most likely have been in the Linnorm Kingdoms for some time before trying to do this. (The idea 'seed' is for someone who has built up at least a little bit of a warrior reputation there before trying to kill a linnorm).

I suspect the "canonical answer" part of your request scared people away; at least, that's why I refrained from responding.

My two cents: I think the reaction would range from enthusiastic welcome (for a very popular, powerful figure) to a "constitutional crisis" pitting traditionalists against pragmatists (for a particularly despised potential ruler).

All you need to do to become a Linnorm King is to kill a linnorm and then prove it to the people and then claim a kingdom that doesn't currently have a king (this may well mean you need to defeat a reigning king, of course!).

Whether or not you're Ulfen doesn't matter, although once you ARE king, if you're not an Ulfen, the people might not enjoy serving under your rule—depends on the kingdom, since each of the Linnorm Kingdoms has a different "personality."

Awesome - I was hoping the intent was to have that kind of 'window of possibility'. Much viking politics I see in the future (Read: bloodshed and peril) ;D

Thank you James (and hogarth!) :)
