Golarion and Goblins as PCs

Homebrew and House Rules

Looking at the racial traits that Paizo has put out concerning Goblins as player characters then remembering that rogues don't have martial weapon proficiency as a class feature...

It occurred to me that if a player wanted to make a Golarion themed Goblin character as a rogue, that they would as the rules are currently written spend their level 1 feat on 'Martial Weapon Proficiency (Dog Slicer)' in order to wield their racial weapon that seemingly all NPC Goblins are proficient in.

Should not the Goblin Racial traits include proficiency with Dogslicers and Horsechoppers?

ANyhow.. just something that came to mind. (i'm in the process of making a goblin character for a campaign and yup.. its a rogue.)

It seems a no-brainer to me to include the ubiquitous "Weapon Familiarity" racial trait:

Goblins are proficient in the Dogslicer and Horsechopper, and they treat any weapon with Goblin in the name as a martial weapon.

Actually, neither the dogslicer nor the horsechopper should be weapon entries. A dogslicer is a short sword, a horsechopper a halberd. Sure, they're usually primitive (fragile) ones, and might not look exactly like every other short sword and halberd, respectively, but not every short sword looks the same, anyway.

Keeping the list of "actual" weapons small and making other weapons merely local variants with nothing more than cosmetic changes and/or different names prevents problems like this.

Since I'm running an all-goblin campaign on the PbP forum, I can't help but pipe in. I told my gobbies they could have dogslicer proficiency for free. None of them even carry one, though. They all opted for other weapons instead (including short swords!).

See if your GM will let you use a dogslicer, anyway. It's only a little different from a short sword (slashing, not piercing, and 1/2 the weight) and certainly not better. I'd have no problem with it.
