Greetings.
Well I am a long time PC gamer but my friends have all gone casual console. Nothing wrong with that except I miss running with my Bros. So the PS3 just got to my affordable range so I ordered one. Can you folks recommend multi-player games for the PS3 only please. I am hoping that there is something out there like Champions of Norrath we played the hell out of that in college. Other types are cool too like FPS and RPGs. Thanks for your help in advance!

Dungeon Siege 3 is cool and funny....but a bit short; finished it in solo player in about 16 hours (using katarina)
Mostly the Modern Warfare or Call of Duty series are born for multiplayer, but i don't play those so cannot say.

The Call of Duty series and Battlefield series get a lot of players. I have played Call of Duty World at War online and it is fun especially if you have a lot of friends to mess around with in private sessions. The only problem that I found was that some people are sooo freaking good it can seem impossible. When it comes to those games I am a perennial noob.
I like Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer function. Its from a third person perspective in Rockstar Game's fashion, but it has a lot of variety in games. You can free roam with a few friends and take out bandit hideouts or you can play a variety of scenarios that they provide for you. On top of that it is a really great single player game.
Rumor is that the new Batman: Arkham City game will also have a multiplayer function with one player controlling Batman and the other controlling Catwoman.
I have a friend who swears by DC Universe Online but its a subscription service and I haven't played it at all.
Cool I bet we would like some of those games. I hear you about the online play though I tried my hand years ago in Star Wars Battlefront and was schooled relentlessly lol.
Thanks for the Tip Red Dead Redemption sounds like its our speed and I dont think my mates have picked it up yet.
I have to surf the net now I heard a rumor about a new X-men RPG in the works?
If you like the mix of silly and serious of the various LEGO games, there are some that have been released on the PS3 for Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Indiana Jones. They are all fun and are all two player games.
Also, coming out at the beginning of November is Lord of the Rings: War in the North, an action-rpg that is multi-player off or online. It is looking to be fun and bloody. By the way, this one is from the Champions of Norrath/Baldur's Gate people.

Borderlands is fun with some multiplayer aspects, up to four people who mostly cooperate in the story game. The plot/etc is sorta on the weak side at times, but hey, it's fun blasting away levels. Borderlands 2 has been announced for next year or so also.
Warhawk, while fairly old, is an absolute blast on the PS3.
Lots of opportunities to team up with buddies and wreak havoc on the opposing team. Lots of people with large maps means you won't be overly harassed if you don't want to be. If you and a buddy want to get into a jeep and head off on an infiltration on your own, or go and take over a small base on the map, there's lots of opportunity to do so.
