Honor System

Homebrew and House Rules

Dark Archive

I'm developing a game in Tien Xia based directly on Fuedal Japan. What I'd like to do is come up with some kind of system for keeping track of a character's 'Honor'. A couple ideas I was throwing around:

- Make it a -5 to +5 scale that replaces (or adds to) Charisma for the sake of Social checks when a character's standing and reputation would be a factor.

- Make it a factor of NPC relationship status. For example, if you have 5 Honor, that counts as 5 extra points for NPCs who take that kind of thing into account.

This will ultimately be a kingmaker style game, too, so I'm interested in your thoughts as to how any honor system should interact with the city management.

Has anyone ever tried this sort of thing in the past? Anyone else have any ideas I can shamelessly steal?

If you have a old copy of the oriental adventures rules they may have something.

That said I like your idea of a modifier for Charisma for social interactions... while we could micro manage it into the ground keep it simple.

Leave honour as personal reputation.

Family reputation is just a -1, 0 or +1 modifier - it counts but its not the be all and end all.

Superior social rank gives a +2 modifier and inferior would be -2. Yes... this stacks! Negotiation with a higher social caste is harder.

The winner of the All TienXia Sake Drinker Contest, has big time kudos (+2), his family is undistinguished but he is of an inferior caste.

Normally this person would be beneath attention but his reputation means he would be treated decently if he also stuck to the social conventions.
