Star Wars Legal Tender Coins

Hmmm. 8 x $2 1 oz. silver New Zealand coins for $470 + shipping.

One wonders why you would even bother making them "legal tender" at that point. Considering that an ounce of silver is currently valued at almost $40, they'd be worth considerably more melted down and sold for material than they would be used as currency.

I get that the intention is that they're a collector's item and that's where the value stems from. I just wonder why they bothered making them legal for use as currency, considering that no sane person would do so. :)

Having worked retail and fast food jobs in the past, I've seen quite a bit of "valuable" currency being used to pay for fairly trivial things...

Actually they are $390.58 + Shipping *Right Now* the $470 is the New Zealand Dollar price.

If they're legal tender, then it is probably illegal to melt them down and sell (you know, assuming that sort of thing is illegal in NZ and they could prove you did it, blah blah blah). just a thought.

Okay, fair enough. Still, the value of the material is far and away higher than their face currency value. 8 coins x 1 oz. each (@ $40/oz.) = $320 USD

So you almost break even, but it's still not worth it (aside from, again, the collector's value, which is pretty much the entire reason they exist). My only point was to mock the silliness of attaching piddling "legal tender" value to them when the material itself is far more valuable. If you want to own them as a collector's item, by all means do so! :D

It is even worse then that.

It is $390.58 + Shipping for 4 Coins. There are 2 sets of 4 coins, Empire and Rebel set, each set is $390.58 + Shipping.

Too true. I worked at a convenience store years ago and had a guy come in and buy smokes using 50's era half dollars. I kicked out $2 in bills into the register for the coins ... turns out the lot of them were worth about $70 (though the coin shop offered me $25 for the lot of them, I compared what I had to what they had on hand and came up with about $70 in value).

I wouldn't be surprised if someone did spend those suckers at some point.

The Exchange

Actually coin collections are formed when you dont spend your money and they wind up in a container or under the sofa with other stuff which is then rediscovered when your descendants decide fifty years later that they probably should clean up some of your old stuff.

Thats why i have a 1495 Chinese Coin...where the hell my ancestors got that from is a mystery.

It'll happen sooner or later. I work in a bank in a small town and we still see people bringing in stuff thats worth far more than its face value.

Just recently we had a guy who brought in, on three separate occasions, a Wal-Mart sack full of cash in small bills that he and his wife had found while cleaning out her deceased mother's house. There was several thousand in each bag, with at least a couple hundred dollars worth of silver certificate $1s, as well as some red and blue note $5s. Alot of them in pretty decent shape, too.

People either dont know what they have, dont care what they have, or need money too badly to care cause of the economy.

So give it time, lol.
