Bestiary Paper Minis

Miniatures

Is there a reason why you don't offer bestiary paper minis, but only the cartoon ones?

I would immediately buy a PDF with all the bestiary creature illustrations, scaled correctly, for half the price of the bestiary book or so. Or more.

Meh. Give me Monster Vault style tokens and I'll be more than happy.

I have lots of tokens, and sometimes one of my players brings his warhammer miniatures, but I personally prefer paper minis. They are easy to make (print), you can cut and paste your encounters together perfectly, and I feel they are easier to identify during play.

However, the PF ones are all in this cartoon style, which some might like, but I don't. However, seeing the amazing art in the APs and the Bestiary makes me want those monstes as paper minis.

Paizo doesn't publish the paper minis; someone else does. So they create them how they see fit.

If someone else were to get a license from Paizo, I'm sure they could create their very own minis however they liked.

Personally, I agree with you - they're too cartoonish for my taste. I just wanted to point out that it has nothing to do with Paizo.

This is not 100% accurate...The Pathfinder Paper Minis line is licensed to individual artists and the art is subject to approval by us (as are which sets are in production). The current art is certainly not to everybody's tastes, something of which I am aware of when I'm looking at new artists for the line. :)

Well if you own the PDF there are ways to extract the images (none of them easy with free software sorry to say). Scale them in the GIMP and print them out yourself.

But why are you looking for new artists when you already have the art in the bestiary?

Oh, right. Very true.

But my basic point was that if someone didn't like the current artwork, they could work with Paizo to create their own set of paper minis in a style that they'd prefer ...

Because not everything in an AP has art in the Bestiary or in the adventure, and a consistent art style for a set is one of the goals I have for the line. (I really like working with the artists, as well. :) )

That is certainly a possibility. :)

Edit: I'll also add that the AP and Bestiary art that we get would lose a lot of detail when scaled down. Realistic styles does not lend itself well when scaled down, and you end up having to cut a lot of details that look fantastic at double resolution (something I do have to tell my Paper Mini artists to keep in mind).

For you do it yourself types out there, detail is no problem if you use photo paper and a high DPI printer (even cheap $20 printers from walmart have a photo paper setting with a 600 to 1200 dpi). Just glue your photo paper to card stock before cutting and folding and you are done, high quality, tough, and cheap (it costs a bit more than standard card stock minis but the quality is worth it.)

Hm. I just did some copypaste-photoshop self-made minis with the art from some of your PDFs I bought, but .. well .. I don't like to do it and I don't have time to do it for more than a few examples.

I'd rather just buy another PDF from you, where all I have to do is print, cut-out, glue.

I can understand the point about losing detail, but they still look great (as my home-made attempts showed), and they are much closer to what my players expect, knowing the great art from your products.

A consistent style is important, I completely agree - maybe that's why launching a second line might be a good idea - keep the current comic-style creatures for the APs, and offer higher-priced but complete companion products for each of the bestiaries with the bestiary art.

Such a bestiary companion product might be a great opportunity - a PDF with one mini for each creature in the bestiary as Paper Mini. I know I'd pay 30$ for that.

I use 'Foam Core' board as backing for counters. Being a quarter inch thick, they're easy to pick up.

Liz, as you are here, do you have any idea when the rest of Legacy of Fire is scheduled to be completed (if ever), I am just about to start part 3 and would love to have the paper minis line continue (it makes my life easier).

+1.

Hmm - too bad you seem unwilling to even contemplate such a product - I'm sure it would be a great seller.

Silence does not mean unwillingness. Silence often means "busy doing other stuff". :D
