I find inspiration periodically in lists. This thread is intended to be used to compile such a list, hopefully useful to others as well.
I was considering the (seemingly) incompetent NPC. When I use them, I can't think of anything that is simply foolish or incoherent other than insults and babble. Both of which lead a RP encounter to a different end. I'm looking for those odd things that make the clever PC listen for hidden content or outright laugh.
Often the kind of thing that I'm trying to find is joke... Some of you probably know more of these than I can think of.
Things the Foolish NPC Asks/Says
- Hey, do you remember me? I met your brother.
[FOOLISH_NPC] has solicited an expensive prostitute through a third party. The [FOOLISH_NPC] was told to be discreet or else the escort would never arrive and [FOOLISH_NPC]'s deposit would be lost. [FOOLISH_NPC] mistakes one of the PCs for the escort. [FOOLISH_NPC] approaches the PC and begins asking questions about available produce; what are the best choices this time of year, size, shape, color, and so on. Ideally, the PC tries to answer as honestly as possible and never thinks to make a Sense Motive check. I've used this with my current group and the end result was a tavern brawl that engulfed the marketplace. Use responsibly.
