AVAST anti-virus

has anybody heard about this or is anyone able to point to a professional review of this software? My mom lives on a limited income and is considering this. I'm trying to find any reliable sources on it.

Your help is appreciated.

PCMag for Avast

PCMag for AVG

Both have a fee version.

I'm running Avast on my laptop. Still got a nasty infection a few months ago: it gave me a warning about it, but it was already too late then. It was a relatively new threat, though, and apparently not in the database yet. I switched from AVG after a virus got through it a year or two ago.

AVG Free will (or used to) let you schedule scans, which Avast won't do unless you pay for the upgraded version. So you have to remember to run your own scans.

After the aforementioned infection, I was able to get rid of it with Malwarebytes, although they want money to be able to schedule scans as well. Here's the PCMag review on it.

Not a professional review, but I've been using the free version of Avast for 5++ years and had no problems or infections affect my PC since then.* It doesn't use much resources and just lies nicely in the background. The one time I actually had got a virus on my usb stick that I had used at school, Avast nealty took care of it.

*Being cautious, always keeping Windows and software up to date and so on also helps a great deal.

If you have a legal version of Windows, which I hope you do. I HIGHLY recommend Microsoft's Security Essentials. It's hands down the best antivirus software I've used. Very unobtrusive and it requires little resources. Just google microsoft security essentials.

Avast is free, a Plus

The Negatives, they are slower to update then Symantec or McAfee. But if your mother basiclly is a low risk browser that should not cause much of an issue, But if she opens a lot of Spam or Downloads lots of files from Fileshare networks that are a Higher Risk user they chances will go up that Avast AV being slow on the update may cause problems.

Thanks, but I have a question. The web site says it is a "free download". Ok, but do I have to pay for it to use it, or is it free to use also?

And yes, I have a legal copy of 32bit Home Vista,

ps. I always get suspicious of the term "free download" because so many times, yea, you can download it for free, but it won't work without paying for it.

MSE is totally free and well-regarded (see Gizmo's review above). I use it on all my Windows 7 machines.

Thanks. I will be spending some quality time there over the next few months, as I am not too pleased with the anti-virus part of my cleanup / tuneup / optimize / anti-virus / firewall / etc. software, and am looking to make at least a change for the anti-virus / firewall portion.

I use avast on all of my systems and have never had any issues.I also DL alot ot things and visit alot of sites that should be infected with alot of really nasty stuff and have had no issues. And in the free version I have you can schedule scans and the program seems to update virus info every day or two, it is constantly updating itself.

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials. My only problem is it insists on going into overdrive every time I open my downloads folder and it either tries to scan every file or all the icon thumbnails or something.

If you want a REAL assessment of antiviruses, I believe this is the place to go.

Just waking up so I apologize if I'm repeating someone else's post. In addition to MS Security Essentials put the free version of Malwarebytes on the computer. Two of my friends run a computer repair shop and they highly recommend both of those. They would also say, above all avoid Norton.

Malwarebytes is only an active scanner unless you pay for it. It's good at it, but it's not going to do for background system protection for free.

If you lock your computer up enough and don't download shady stuff, it's really easy to not even worry about it. Get Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster. You only even really need to use Spybot's Immunization feature.

As mentioned above, I would strongly recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. It runs smoothly and has caught a lot of threats that seem to slip by a lot of the other products(and this is coming from someone who isn't a big MS fan.)

Malwarebytes is a great program for removing bugs you have already gotten(especially those damnable fake AV programs), but for a live scanner I would go MSE.
