Then every episode I can recall makes him categorically wrong about everything and obnoxious on top of it. How did this guy get named Brainy? Essentially every other smurf is named after their actual attributes. Handy is actually handy. Baby is really a baby. Vanity really is vain. Grouchy is really grouchy.
Brainy should be Dumbass Loudmouth Smurf. (Perhaps his original Smurfese name is Palin?) But he's not, which suggests the intention is that actual brainy people are all really idiots and we should ignore them in favor of ignoramuses and geriatric patriarchs.

I imagine it's mostly for bonding, recreation, and/or dominance displays*, but perhaps it also generates some kind of hybridized DNA strain that Papa Smurf emails to the storks for the cloning.
