I'm not sure that "tabloids" means the same thing in British as it does in American.
I think in British terms, both the Boston Herald and the New York Post would qualify as tabloids. (That might not help since you're on the Left Coast.)

The news of the world is the most successful newspaper in the UK. It is a god aweful rag, and one of the major cash cows of the Murdock empire. It basically funds the Times and Sunday Times by it's existence.
Tabloids are very different here in the UK, the Sun(another Murdock paper, like news of the world, the times and the sunday times) can quiet accurately claim to make or break election campaigns. This is a major victory for media plurality. Now if we can just stop his takeover of BSKYB.
