If you have a question about how a rule works, post to the rules forum. If you want to discuss why a rule is the way it is, that's the general discussion forum. If you are requesting advice on a build, or making suggestions on the best way to build a character, that's what the advice forum is for.

I was going to propose creating a Rules Design forum, but it seems that the General Discussion forum is where such threads should go.

I think that one problem lies with people such as myself (let's say the general public) quite frankly not being aware that the General Discussion forum can be used to tackle these topics.

Yeah, I wish the General Discussion forum wasn't the right place for the "why is the rule so bad...". It is the first place a new person would come to in order to talk about the Pathfinder rules, and it is completely lousy with CharOp arguments. I'm not new, and I basically avoid the Paizo forums except for the Campaign Setting and Campaign Journals ones now.

I considered flagging, but then I realized half the threads in General are CharOp arguments, and gave up.

+1 to Ernest's Post.

There's a lot of Naysaying on the boards and much of it comes from folks who throw around DPR and theorycraft as gospel. I have players who are new to GMing and new to the game. I am always wary of sending them to the boards for advice, because of the toxic nature of the "optimization" is king crowd.

I don't think there is such a crowd, but optimization can't really be ignored, and it helps to know certain things, even if you don't plan to build the best possible character.
If a new player wants to play a weaker class he should know what those weaknesses are and how to account for them. It also helps avoid that disappointed feeling when you realize your character is not really that important to the team's success. Players want to feel like their character matters. They do need to realize that the GM's style is also important so they may have to try a few things out before they get their character where they want it to be.

Whatever happened to trial and error, learning the system on your own and/or with your friends and fellow gamers?

Well clearly that's secondary to being told you are WRONG, and that the class you are playing is bad because the Pathfinder developers hate it and you personally. At least that's what I garner from General.

Because "learning the system" can easily mean "making characters that aren't fun to play, turning people off from the game entirely." Or "making characters that are on accident way too powerful, turning others off from the game entirely."

Optimization is system mastery, and system mastery, like it or not, was intentionally built into the 3.x chassis that Pathfinder uses.

But, "learning the system" can also easily mean "mastering the system on your own without utilizing a messageboard" as well.

Don't get me wrong, I've no issue with optimization, and quite enjoy some of the write-ups I see, just...eh, whatever.

I guess I'm lucky that my group, traditionally, hasn't had a big issue with this, and finds a greater reward in coming up with stuff on their own.
