What are the failings of the current weather system?

What changes would you like to see?

Are there any situations that are not covered under the weather system?

How can the weather system be changed to better simulate real world conditions while still being simple enough to understand and use at the gaming table without trouble?

I am working on a campaign setting that expects lots of wilderness exploration and travel. Weather is one of the systems on my list that I want to look into while I am building this setting.

Personally, I think the system was somewhat of an after thought when the game was designed. It feels like a great starting point for someone who is looking for a more dynamic mechanic. I have seen people complaining on these boards before about the system, what exactly are you looking for?

I rather liked the 1st Edition Wilderness Survival Guide's weather system. It took into account the seasons and other factors.

It had a table with the months of the year giving different "special weather" based on the season and climate zone, for example. The special weather entries also spelled out how long they should last, and were in the same format as "normal precipitation" entries that had more variation than the current system.

Drawback: More dice, and better used between sessions than during sessions.

I like the current system, however I would have liked a few more tables to choose between. I really would not want more rolls per say, and if so max one more in special cases for extreme weather.

Also I wouldn't want too many modifiers to the roll... though the one problem I do have is that the weather table in the pathfinder core rules tend to give rather radical weather changes more often then say a period of generally greyish weather.

Anyway that is my view :)

I need to look into the 1st edition system.

Maybe there is a way to adapt it so it wouldn't be so dice heavy, though I wouldn't mind having something that I could use in prep time to list out the different days and what the weather would be like. Almost like pre-rolled initiative or encounters.
