Making a Witcher PC

I know this has come up before but I don't think it has come up after the UM was released so I want some opinions/advice on my idea for a Witcher PC.

I am thinking a Magus/Alchemist, wielding a Bastard Sword, the Magus class would give the melee capabilities as well as the spells (researching spells that emulate the signs) and the Alchemist class would provide for the mutagens.

Any views on whether this seems like a feasible build?

Personally I would make it a straight Alchemist. The mutagens and infusions would work well like in the witcher for buffing your combat ability. You can then use the bombs as to emulate the various magic attacks that the Witcher has. No real need to water your class down with the magus. Make it a half elf with the alternate racial trait from the APG to get Elven Curve Blade or Bastard Sword and you should be fine.

I would go with just the Alchemist but I don't see how the bombs alone would be able to emulate the signs.

Especially where the Magus gets spells like Burning Hands which is pretty much the Igni sign, and all you would have to do is research a version of Burning Hands that deals force damage and has the ability to knock targets back (research higher spell level versions that have a chance to stun) which would work as the Aarad sign. The Shield spell would be pretty much the Quen sign. This would leave only 3 signs, the Axii sign which is pretty much a charm spell, the Yrden sign which may involve making an all new spell, and the Heliotrop sign which again would involve making a new spell.

And while possible to make a character that emulates a Witcher using any race, to stick with the idea of Witchers I favor a human.

Well, an alchemist already has the fire bomb and the force bomb as an option. The charm one you are out of luck on... but basing something off of the confusion bomb may work.

If you are creating custom stuff then you can really go with either one. But you are right with an RP basis the bombs are not the same as signs... but you can have your DM handwave the mechanics and say they are jars with the sign engraved on the bottle. ;)

I personally think most of what a witcher does is covered by the Alchemist. But if you want the full martial with spells as well as potions then you will have to multi class. I just think you are going to suffer a bit in damage and being able to hit with a 3/3 character as opposed to a 6 Alc.

well, if you search around in this forum, you can find my conversion around somewhere, but no, I did not use the magus as a basis.

Having just acquired UM, I prefer my version to building something around the Magus, mainly because the Magus is too magical, IMO.

IMO, the witcher is in decreasing order
1) amazing reflexes
2) good combat
3) some small magics

So Magus = too magic for this.

However, I have no familiarity with the Alchimist yet, so I could not tell for this one.

YMMV of course
