Where I'm from, he's better remembered as Zeb Macahan, but the *hat off* sentiment remains the same.

Excellent in the first giant bug movie - "Them!", had a huge impact on me as a child. He will be missed.
FYI - The flamethrowers and rifles in 'Them!' were actual surplus weapons from WWII, since both actors (Whitmore & Arness) had combat experience handling them they gave them real deal. Always added a level of "badass" to the movie.
