Profession Skill uses

Homebrew and House Rules

I know a lot of people use the profession skill as sort of a specialized knowledge skill, but does anyone have any need house-ruled ideas for profession skills?

For example: In my Legacy of Fire game, the monk took Profession (Masseuse) and I am house-ruling its use in helping eliminate fatigue/exhaustion.

The way I have it now is that a profession check can be used to get rid of fatigue for 3 hours (takes 1 minute, so it can't be used mid-battle easily). Likewise it would reduce exhaustion to fatigue for 3 hours. Haven't decided on the DCs yet.

Any other neat ideas?

One that I like that I've used is making it a recourse gathering skill to pair with crafting, like if you're in the wilderness and need to make something. Profession (Miner) gives you metal to make metal items, Profession (Tanner) lets you make leather to make lethercrafts, etc.

Given a raw resources on hand in the environment, just apply the check result as value of materials rather than income in coin.

I also usually allow proffession to be used in place of craft. I also use it for when a player wants to do something related to their field want to tie knots? Good thing you have proffession sailor. The prince coming over for dinner? Good thing you have proffession chef. That sort of stuff.

I had a use of Profession-Herbalism that acts as a replacement for the ability to cast spells in order to create certain potions, magical pastes and healing salves.

It was created with 3.5 in mind, but here it is.

Text indicating "overland actions" refers to my Overland Round houserule.

I also have a re-write of the whole craft/profession/perform skills, but that earned a less-than-luke-warm reception from these boards :(
