Converting CR to "Dungeon Level"?

Homebrew and House Rules

In the 1st. ed. AD&D DMG there was an appendix where you could randomly create a dungeon. You could even play solo as they had monster encounter charts organised by what level of the dungeon you were on (from 1-10). My friends and I used that a lot on days when only a couple of us were free to game.

I'd like to do something similar for PF but I don't know how to proceed with creating dungeon level based encounter charts. I just don't know how to transpolate the CR of a monster onto the appropriate dungeon level chart. Any ideas on how I should go about doing this?

Thanks!

SJ

If you are after randomized dungeons you may want to try out some of the 4E DnD board games. It is obviously not Pathfinder but it is specifically designed for this sort of thing.

That's too basic. Not to mention that I don't care for 4E; all that shifting and sliding is annoying. Characters jump around so much it makes the Naruto ninja's jealous. Combat is like gonzo Chess on a bad LSD trip.

There are a lot of programs out there that will randomly generate a dungeon map for you but that isn't what I'm looking for. With the old DMG, you could create and adventure as you went; no DM needed. That's what I want to do with PF but I don't know how to create the encounter charts.

I realize that is your goal, and it isnt just about the layout, its about the monsters placed, what they do, and possible 'random twists'.

Since you obviously want it to be pathfinder, you can use the encounter tables here

In addition I recommend making use of the gamemastery plot twist cards to add a little spice to your dungeons.

I would suggest looking at the encounter level, based on the Average Party Level APL p398 of core rules.

Your encounter is based off the total exps all the monsters add up to so if level 1 of your dungeon is going to have 4 1st level PC's going at it you are looking at 200, 400, 600 exp encounters. This equates to 2-4 orcs for example. You might want a higher level bad guy in there for the odd die rolls equating to CR4 or 1200exps.

The back of the Bestiary p324 has a low level dungeon encounter table you might want to look at.
