Homunculus without you

Homebrew and House Rules

So i have a hypothetical question, could a Homunculus be able to take levels of wizard if it's master died and it didn't go insane?

What kind of specials rules MIGHT their be? I have an idea for 1st level adventure for some friends of mine but im still fleshing it out so i figured i would ask,

It's magic, so I don't see why it couldn't. As long as it makes for a compelling story. :)

Are you trying design this as a PC character, or is it for an NPC? For NPCs, anything goes!

NPC, and adventure idea ;). Just figured i would ask.

One thing to keep in mind is that normally constructs do not learn, and homunculi don't generally even speak. They are closer to little flying remote control cameras. However a master's death is where things get sort of funky. The homunculi text states that old homunculi who have outlived their masters go insane and sometimes think they are their masters reincarnated. At that point, perhaps they have been "awakened" and actually can learn, take class levels, etc (and possibly speak). Its a little like if you died and your computer thought that it was you, reincarnated.

Perhaps the Homunculus is a vessel for the liberated soul of the former master.

Is your Homunculus equiped with it?

That would be the COOLEST... and extremely sinister. Imagine if mages had been making Homonculi thinking it was a useful but harmless tool only to find on death they had their soul trapped in the body? No wonder the little bastards are seen as insane!

This would make a great plot hook... OMG... so many possibilities.

A good one would be the mysterious benefactor who hires the party to kill the Homunculus of a deceased wizard... only to find the benefactor is a Devil who is reclaiming the soul of the wizard who hoped to dodge the 'deal' (Stolen from a Mickey Rourke movie I cant remember).

Or maybe a fragment of the soul has escaped and much like the scientist in the Fly is doing the whole ... Kill Meeeeeeeee, Kill Meeeeeeeeee thing.

Part of the Deal was the Devil could not harm directly or call other Devils to harm directly the Mage

Perhaps the homunuclus is the familiar of a lich, and carries its philactery? You destroy the lich, but you know it'll be back if you can't find that stupid familiar.
