Anyone interested in converting this?

I was working on a martial truenamer base class (The Trueblade, kind of a truespeaking paladin-duskblade), and was working on the concept of Whispers, which are like 0-level utterances that can be used at will.

For example....

Fated Breath (sp): You may use the results of a Truespeak check in place of a Constitution check when holding your breath.

I still like the idea of truename magic, and would very much like to see something done with this. But I think it would be better to approach it from a new direction, rather than trying to convert the horrible flawed Truenamer from Tome of Magic.

I second that motion...

I actually liked the truename system in ToM. I liked that they were reversible....it gave it a nice, quaint, Basic D&D feel. I liked the idea of skill-based magic, although the system of determining the DC needs to be overhauled big time. I liked the Laws of Resistance and Sequence.

I liked how the "tiers" or "lexicons" followed the order of the basic journalism questions of Who (truenames of people and creatures), What (truenames of objects) and Where (truenames of places, areas, regions, and destinations). I even worked on an epic system of truenaming that dealt with When (time travel and other time-related effects) and even minor divine levels of truenaming that dealt with Why and How (truespeaking effects that affect morality and fundamental laws of the multiverse).

But the power levels of the utterances defintely need to be tweaked as well.

+1

I had dropped the notion of Truename Magic over in SGG's "What do you want to see" thread as well a week or so ago.

The problem is, at least for me, is that I like the concept of truename magic, and while looking at what was done in ToM, was interesting, I don't know that it entirely fit what I was thinking a truenamer should be. What exactly I was or am thinking in that regard, I don't know exactly, but it sort of feels like some sort of amalgamation of Earthsea magic, The Will and the Word notions for Eddings Belgariad, the Fellowship of the Seven from Janny Wurts Wars of Light and Shadow and a Druidic Archetype.

Don't know if that makes any sense or not. Frankly I'm not entirely sure it makes sense to me either...

I kind of picture truenaming as a way to conjure and compel creatures, possibly using slightly different pronounciations of truenames to alter creatures, for weal and woe. Creatures particularly vulnerable to truenaming would be the "single-essence" creatures, creatures that do not have a dual nature of soul and body, like outsiders and fey, and possibly undead.

I've been influenced the most by Elizabeth Bear's Novels of the Promethean Age, particularly "Blood and Iron" and "Whiskey and Water" when it comes to truename magic.

I also like the idea of truenamers being able to affect objects by speaking the name of the item. For example, a truenamer should be able to speak a lock open (making a Truespeak check with a DC equal to the DC to use Disable Device to unlock it).

Will have to check out those novels as well.
