Alkenstar or Eberron

Gamer Connection

This thread is a continuation of a previous idea building thread I started, but as the ideas come into a better focus, I thought I would make a new thread to keep people involved.

I have an idea for a campaign that is what I would call very "High fantasy Steam Punk". By this I mean that technology has risen to an industrial level but on top of that, magical technology like airships, constructs and other things like that. is also coming into prominence (Or already is there). Major inspiration for this is coming from video games like Final Fantasy VI, much like Eberron.

Eberron is actually one option for this campaign, I would need to look at the Dragonmarks, to figure out if they need to be reworked for PFRPG, and the races allowed would be the core races and the Warforged, using the Ironborn of Questhaven for stats and a bit of flavor. My big problem with Eberron is actually that there seems to be a distinct lack of asian flavor, and I'm hoping to use the Samurai and Ninja classes. And just like Japanese stuff, :p

My other idea, is to place the game in Alkenstar. I had the idea that years ago, an ore that can be used to make magic items (including items that allow spellcasters to cast their magic) called Arcanum was discovered within the Mana Wastes. This lead to a magical as well as technological revolution within Alkenstar. This would also herald the rise of the Ironborn, as well as people who are "Runemarked" and can cast naturally because of this.

One theme I would like to look at with Alkenstar is what happens when one nation gains this much of a technological leap when compared with the other nations.

So I'm looking for opinions on both these ideas? Is Eberron the more reasonable choice, or Alkenstar? Does this go too far out of Alkenstar's scope or does it matter?

Didn't the nation across the ocean have an asian theme? I can't for the life of me remember the name of he nation, but it is the of hte Inspired. The place with the psionic emphasis. Riedra, maybe?

Did that not have an asian leaning to it?

Not that this post is at all helpful to your bigger questions. And frankly, I could be wrong.

Sarlona is the continent, Riedra the empire. They have a chinese look, but that's about it I would say.

The Lhazaar Principalities of Eastern Khorvaire could very well receive a Japanese flavor IMO.

The dragonmarks are based on a feat at level 6. Since the feats are handed at levels 5 or 7, you will have to make a decision to give them a little early or a little late. In my profile, you'll find my own reworking of dragonmarks and Eberron races (I went for 1, 5, 9 and 13, no need for a prestige class in my version, it adds up). Feel free to use them.

I don't know enough about Alkenstar to compare both ideas you have.

Speaking strictly for myself, I would prefer either straight Eberron game, with appropriate changes made to incorporate PFRPG rules and new psionic rules from DSP, or straight Alcenstar game, with gunslingers, alchemists and perhaps summoners with steampowered jacks instead of eidolons, much like those in Iron Kingdoms. And I would love to play in both games. :)

I agree. I don't believe you're doing Alkenstar justice by disregarding the Mana Wastes and it's absolute lack of magic. I would be very interested in playing in a fantasy game using PRPG rules without magic. It really ups the risk of death and justifies the presence of firearms. Knowing there are no clerics to heal you and no wizards to blast the big nasty flying monster out of the air makes you think twice about running head long into danger.

+1

THIS sounds like a lot of fun. Extremely challenging.

As someone who has played Eberron since it came out, we just changed over to the Pathfinder rules. Also one thing we did was a one free feat for people to use Dragon Marks.

A valid point, sadly though as much fun as the above game sounds, I don't think it's the kind of steampunk style game I want to run, so it looks like for this one it's going to be a PFRPG Eberron game.

I'll have the recruitment thread up soon, thanks to everyone for helping out with this. I'll most likely be starting this game, and possibly one more if I can not get a local game going.
