I intend to start a PBP nWoD game here on the 25th of March 2011.
This thread is for anybody who would like to play.
I will give preference to people who have not had a chance to play in a PBP before. If you are currently in another game, please do not apply for this one, unless there are no responses by the 15th of March
Game information
Characters will be mortal, built from the core book only.
Character creation is exactly as per the core rules, with no houserules.
The unique twist to the game I offer, is that I will roll all dice for the players, and will judge all rules issues behind the scenes, allowing the game thread to be purely narrative. After character creation, I will keep your character sheets. You will be able to play without needing to consider the rules. Character advancement will be done in the OOC thread, but the game thread will be exclusively in character.
The setting will be a fictional small city in 1979. I will provide a map of the city, and will also provide setting details. There may, or may not, be supernatural forces at work, but the characters will not start with any knowledge of such matters.
Instead of using the resources dot system, we will use currency. I will provide price lists for the period at hand. All characters will start poor.
Characters will be criminals and outsiders. This is crucial for the story I wish to share. The primary motivation for the game will be for the characters to advance their interests and gain wealth through any means necessary. This will not be a heroic tale.
I will allow no more than three players, to keep things simple.
I previously ran the Evening of an Empire PBP, after the original DM dropped out. This will be my second PBP.
Here is some inspiration: Across 110th Street.

I have decided to base the game in New York, rather than an imaginary city. This will allow me to use history and internet resources, rather than make things up from scratch.
This of course presupposes that this thread attracts some interest, and that a game actually happens...
I'm waiting until the 15th; am currently in one PbP already, and am not very familiar w/nWoD.

I would like to throw my hat into the ring. I have not yet done any PbPing at all even though I am attempting to get some long-distance friends to do one which I will be GMing if they can ever find time for me.
Otherwise, completely unsoiled by any previous PbPing. I do own the NWoD core book however and would be happy to give this a go. The only other from among the some odd 500+ NWoD books I own is Hunter: The Vigil, so no worries about me having any metagame knowledge as well. I haven't yet read my Hunter book, lol.

Thank you all for your interest. There are still a few days left for PBP newbies to join, but I certainly don't mind people putting their dots and questions here.
Megan. It counts. I specifically meant people who have not had the opportunity to play in a PBP. Anyone whose sole experience of PBP is running one may certainly jump into this.
John Woodford, Calixymenthillian, Tarlane, welcome.

Firstly, thank you everyone for your interest. I was waiting to see if another new player was interested.
I have decided to have two players, rather than more, because it is easier to keep things moving with a small group.
Pinvendor, You are the first player. You have the core book, and no other PBP at the moment.
Megan Robertson, you are the second, and it is an honour to have you. I read your reviews, and voted for you as an Ennies Judge. You give a great deal to the community.
I am swamped by meatspace commitments until the 21st, so until then, don't make characters, but feel free to think of concepts that will fit well together.
You ought to decide as a team what ethnic or cultural group your characters come from. I recommend one of the following, but only open the spoiler after you have thought of your own:
Ghetto black.
Your characters must know each other, and trust each other from the beginning of the game. You could be related somehow, or have grown up together.
Choose an age to play between sixteen and thirty.
Flesh out a few shared experiences.
Start thinking of reasons for your characters to be criminally inclined.
You can use whatever research you wish.
I will check back here on the 21st, and am eager to see what you have come up with.
We will do character creation after the 21st.

Great Scott! It's a pleasure to be invited to play... and then to have such nice comments made as well :)
The honour's all mine, Taliesin.
Now, a character... who needs to be somewhat criminally-inclined, and lives in New York... and rather young...
Hmmm. I tend to play geeks well (perhaps because I am one!). Probably, given the requirements, from an 'ethnic minority'... Arab, maybe, or black...
Pinvendor, what sort of characters do you like to play?

Possible thoughts (had in the bath this morning...):
Emad Ramen, an Iranian illegal immigrant. Trained as a nuclear engineer by the Iranian government, he fled when he discovered that domestic power generation was not what they had in mind... passing through Afghanistan he had a narrow brush with some American troops who somehow got the idea he was Taliban, so he hitched east finally getting a berth as crewman on a tramp steamer and ending up in New York. He's convinced that he has some family here, but hasn't tracked them down yet, and meanwhile is trying to earn his keep with odd jobs - mostly fixing people's air conditioning or heating systems - and keeping off the radar as far as the authorities are concerned.

I can't help but give a shout out, myself, to Megan Robertson.
I'll be honest. When I first saw you take on a boatload of pbp's, I'm thinking "There's no way!" Of course, all these months later, still going. Most DM's usually run one or two on these boards, you've got like 72 going.
So, obviously, I was way wrong. And I'm glad I was wrong in this case. (I'm sure all your players are also! ;) ) So I say to you...
Bravo, Megan Robertson! Bravo! *applause ensues*
Impressive. *Tips hat* :)

Thank you for the invitation, Taliesin! I will start brushing on the NWoD rules.
I have a tendency to play darkly heroic or disturbed characters. Haven't played too many games in settings based on real world, so no specific ethnicities rush to mind. I am definitely more of a "true to setting" player. New York, '79...hmmm, let's go take a look at what Google says about the prevailing atmosphere at that time.
I must say, your character idea is very well thought out, Megan. I will ponder this for a bit and post again soon.

It's going to have to change a bit with the early date.
1979 was the revolution in Iran that deposed the Shah and brought the Ayatollahs to power. (I was a student at the time and several of our Iranian engineering students were wondering if they ought to go back to help the revolution - they were fervent Muslims and supported the idea of a theocratic government.) So maybe Emad happened to hold the opposing view, or at least if not a supporter of the Shah hoped for a secular democracy. The Russians were invading Afghanistan, and the Taliban were then regarded as 'good guys' given that they were not of the Communist persuasion... so perhaps Emad is a bit on the 'Red' side...

The character idea I have is fairly ethnicity general, so he could easily be Iranian and have a family connection to Megan's idea which would give Megan's character a reason to come to New York rather than somewhere else.
I am imagining a young man who was either born or iimigrated to the US while very young. His father is very abusive and eventually leaves his wife and two boys. She struggles to provide for them having previously never worked. They end up living in fairly poverty stricken neighborhoods and are exposed to the highlights of all manner of criminal and illegal activity. The young man falls in with some bad elements justifying it as a way to make money to move his mother and younger brother out of the ghetto. His plan seems to be working as he was able to obtain enough money to have his brother sent to a private boarding school away from the bad element he himself is involved with and supplement his mother's income to the point she was able to move to a poor but less crime ridden part of the city.

That's got definite potential, Pinvendor.
Perhaps your dad came to the US to run a rug-importing business, my family was on the supply end of the chain. So my initial thought was to come looking for him, but the only address I had when I fled Iran was where you still are...
Going to have to bone up on 1970s 'red-speak' though, although I was involved in student politics in those days - generally arguing with the Reds rather than agreeing with them, though :)

Sorry to have to do this, but I will not have the time available to do justice to a lengthy PBP. Change of plan. Make an American small town teenager. Use the normal character creation rules, with 10 xp to spend.
Post your character below.
March 30th, 2011
No older than sixteen.
May be siblings.
Back story not overly important. Just have a character type.
This will be a short little tale.
My ideas for an epic crime tale are not feasible with my new responsibilities.

I do understand how things can come up and RL is always first. I am happy to continue but allow me to say, you musn't feel obligated to continue with any type of story if your current situation doesn't allow it. Taliesin, if this smaller short story isn't a problem then I am all in, but do not feel you have to stretch yourself thin just because you feel like you must.
