Roundabout way of finishing a faction mission

I ran the Penumbral accords last night with an NPC because there were only three players.

One of the players decided he wasn't going to complete one of his faction missions because he considered it stealing and it was against his religion/alignment.

That was his choice and I thought it was pretty cool he took that stance.

However, the NPC was from the same faction and I decided he'd complete that part of the mission, though the player would get still not get the PA because he wanted none of the stealing.

Then the NPC died during the mission and it looked like no one would complete it.

When they finished the player from the same faction said he'd carry the deceased NPC out of the building. When they returned to report what happened he discovered the item and tried to give it back to it's owner.

She told him to keep it in thanks for all he had done.

So he completed the mission despite trying hard not to.

Evidently, some things are meant to be...

Clever solution on your part.

I don't think GMs should give PA away for free, but in this case it actually makes a lot of sense :)

Does an NPC at a 3 person table get a faction?

The character I was using was part of the same faction. Originally I just had him grab the item because he would.

The other player didn't even know that he had grabbed the item. I gave him a chance to get it, he decided he wasn't going to so the NPC did.

The player wasn't going to get the PA for what the NPC did. It was only because the NPC died, the player of the same faction dragged his body out, and the adventure specifically stated that the owner would let players could keep items found that it all worked out.

It took a lot of things to fall into place.

+1, and agreeance with Diego.

Not really.

I prefer to play/run the NPC as factionless effectively just be a grunt with abilities. They stay in the background and only support the action during combat. If I had been there, I would've felt cheated because an "iconic" NPC prevented me from doing what I chose to do.

This is not the same as another PC completing their/my mission because I chose not to complete it.

Why? Because it is hard/annoying to get into a faction-based argument with an iconic... Whereas you can do that with another PC... NPCs are just... different...

But +1 to Diego's comment about not giving PAs when a player specifically refuses to do something and another *PLAYER* doesn't do it. PAs should be awarded for player action. Having an NPC do something like that kinda steals the PCs' thunder...

You know, there are many roundabout ways to do a mission, from tricking NPCs into helping to bribing people to casting 4 teleports to travel from Cheliax to the Mwangi to Absalom and back, to using PAs to get the mission done (yes, Drogon and I once paid PAs to complete you service to the Satrap...). But those were PC-backed actions.
