I. Hate. Musicals.

Disney kids movies included.

For exactly the same reason as TS.

They make me so angry I hulk out and lose clothes. *covers up*

Will Ferrell?

I'm in the 'alright in some, horrible in others camp'...that pretty much goes the same for Steve Carell too.

I actually haven't seen a scene production for "the Rocky Horror Picture Show", just seen the movie.
It was an...experience, but since Tim Curry can do almost no evil in my book in was one I didn't particularly regret.

LOL. The bar for food delivery in the Bay Area keeps dropping, with no end in sight.

GothBard's higher-ups tried something that, other than the restaurant of choice, was rather sweet and clever: Months and months ago, they handed out a food order sheet for McDonald's. Just at random. In the middle of the day. And people could put whatever they wanted. So of course they all filled it out, assumed it was a joke, and never heard about it again...

...until today, to celebrate their team reaching a milestone, the corporates wanted to fete them by getting them all together, having a little congratulatory gathering, lauding them, and giving them their McDonald's order.

Except... it never came...
The manager in charge or ordering it watched in horror as the estimated delivery time got later, and later, and later... he ended up calling the delivery service and found out that the food was ready, but they hadn't assigned a driver yet. He fired them on the spot and went and picked up the food himself.

But it meant GothBard was stuck staying late at work to eat cold McDonald's food with her co-workers because a delivery service couldn't even handle fricking McDonald's.

For a corporate order.
In downtown San Francisco.

Yeah, I'm betting that one botched order just cost the delivery service over $10,000 in business, because office managers actually talk to each other about which services work and which don't. (As a traveling trainer, I met a LOT of office managers.) And in downtown S.F.? Food delivery is a HUGE business.

It continues to astonish me that in their quest to be cheap (which no one around here pays attention to), they end up being terrible (which everyone around here pays attention to).

Just... wow...

NobodysHome's Story Time (may be a repeat):
In 1994, GothBard and I were finally going to be married, after 7 years of dating and almost 3 years of living together. We didn't have much money, so it was going to be a low-key affair, and we were going to spend the night before the wedding at home.

Nope! The Portuguese Tornado would have NONE of that! She fast-organized a bachelorette party, complete with former high school classmate as male stripper, and threw me out of the house. Having no car and almost no money, I wandered over to the local Motel 6 to spend the night. My brothers and my groomsman heard about this, said, "This shall not stand!", and showed up at my room with... Taco Bell food and Cold Duck Sparkling Burgundy.

We ate the Taco Bell food, took one sip of the Cold Duck and dumped the rest down the sink, and watched HBO 'til midnight.

And THAT was my bachelor party.

I never had a bachelor party.

I didn't either, and I'm on my second marriage.

VE, sorry but I'm not in a PBP(Player) mood now. Also I tend to end up in games where the GM drops us halfway without a word so I don't wanna get into that again. I could go on in my rather irritable mood on how 95% of the GMs of PBPs do not complete what they start, leaving players wondering if they did anything wrong, but its just going to end up as an angry rant.

Near-future dystopia set in the U.S.. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong, both politically and technologically, leaving a group of unlikely heroes to bring the country back from the nightmare it's become. So a lot of 'hard' scifi in the setting background, plus a less overt Handmaid's Tale kind of story.

Also supers, 'cause I love me some powers!

Same here. :)

On second thought, I don't think it's the plots the bother me. Probably on the whole, musical plots are as interesting as non-musical plots. It's the music that keeps me from enjoying the plots.

First because all the music slows the plot waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooown, because so much of the dialogue is fluffed into song. I'm a 'What happens next?' kind of guy, I need things to move along.

Second because the music takes me out of the story, especially when characters are on stage dancing and singing each other their inner thoughts, schemes, and lies.

And third because I want to see emotion expressed as, well, emotion; not song. I want to be shown, not told.

I disappeared on my games once, but it was after...I dunno, like a year or so of GMing. And IIRC I told them I was burned out and out of ideas by that point.

Also life got really weird after the divorce. Just...everything went upside down.

Honestly I get more annoyed when it doesn't even properly start up. I had a GM get mad at me because I refused to stay in the group when it hadn't started the game over a week after recruitment finished and all the characters were chosen. In a freaking Savage Worlds game, where making a character probably takes about 20 minutes of effort. I think waiting an entire week for the GM to start is pretty darn generous. The "1 post a day" standard is already disgustingly slow in my opinion. I mean, really? How long does a post take to make? Honestly? It's a pathetically weak commitment. I was excited about getting into a game where the GM said he wanted people who could post multiple times a day, but it looks like it's already hit molasses. Also, why does it slow down on weekends? When most people, you know...don't have jobs to keep them as busy?

If I'm GMing (which takes way more effort than playing) I probably take 20 minutes at most to make a post. I know I type pretty fast, but I'm taking into account my phone for that. I kept a pretty swift clip when I ran my Fallout game, though I did update it often when I took a 15 minute break or lunch break at my job at the time, and I could count on at least 3 of the players to multi-post per day. Honestly, the main thing that will slow me down as a player is not having anything relevant to contribute to the current flow, story-wise.

Seriously, though, a multi-year commitment is kind of ridiculous to expect people to keep, and yet how else are you supposed to finish an entire campaign when people take two months to make it through one dungeon? It's an asinine contradiction:

"Post basically a paragraph every now and then, when you feel like it, more or less the equivalent what would take you a minute to say in a face to face game" - Acceptable

"Abandon your game before an entire year has passed" - You're a Monster

Well *this* can go down in the record books and one of the lousiest days ever. I had a three-year-old in my class have a petit mal seizure upon waking up from nap. W. T. F. Sooooo scary.
This is my eleventh year of teaching and my second student-has-seizure-on-my-watch experience. Hopefully this means I can go a few good years before the next one.
Kids are in bed, I'm pouring myself a drink and crawling into bed with Netflix. I'm done.

Oh wow. That sucks LM. I haven't seen a seizure in person, but from videos, it seems terrifying to have to watch. I hope the kid is okay! (And you, obviously)

The Exchange

Oh when I run stuff, the pace is breakneck. If I ask for multiple posts per day, I mean it, I'm online for weekdays like every day of the week and I'll even tell the group in advance when I have RL commitments i.e, playing badminton/out for movies. Don't believe me? Check my PBP history under my GM alias. I generally finish an entire AP in a year or so.

But I have gotten from the boards that I'm running too fast as well. Most seem shocked at the pace I push stuff.

I have taken up to an hour for a post before or more, but that's usually when players throw me curve balls/a lot of RPing to do. I'll say that I do not do location discriptions well, so I need more time to imagine a place then begin describing it out even so it tends to be rather barebones.

LM, sux to hear that. Do you have like paramedics you can turn to in school?

I also have a mild headache at the moment so my day isn't starting well.

For some reason, this one scared me more than the grand mal. A grand mal, it's almost surreal in a cheap horror movie effects kind of way. They look possessed. This one, he just stared blankly while his whole body vibrated. Almost cartoonishly. You know, like when Scooby Doo gets scared? When I thought it was done, I asked him if he could sit up, and he said, "I can't; my body doesn't want to." (Honestly, that was I think the scariest part. Because I was afraid he was paralyzed and couldn't understand what had just happened, and because of the way he said it.) Then the shaking happened again.

After a few more minutes though (by this time the director of the school had been notified and was sitting with us, and another teacher had taken the rest of the kids out of the room), he was able to sit up and put on his shoes and she took him to the sick room and he sat there playing with trucks until his mom came. When I put him into his mom's car, half an hour after the incident, he was jumping up and down and giggling and hugging his sister around the neck.

Did anything in particular seem to bring them on? Stuff you knew to watch out for?

His medication, unfortunately.

He was over medicated pretty hardcore, the 80s and all.

At one point he was taking 26 pills a day.

More specifically, stress, sudden excitement (like a surprise party), over stimulation.

Basically, we had to keep things even and mellow for him, which was impossible on a farm with 8 boys.

I've honestly taken hours to do posts before but usually it's stuff I can prep. I once gave a player the planar equivalent of a bank Know Your Client exercise. Again what were you expecting in getting a lawyer for a GM?

OK this is mildly amusing. After spending yesterday and today chasing the FedEx Guy to pick up our box of documents, he finally showed up in our office to collect the box after I started caterwauling repeatedly to their customer service. Turns out yesterday's mysterious cancelation was due to him not feeling capable of lifting the 15kg box on his own. He kept saying it was more then 15kg, we said it wasn't. Come on, how much do 6 files full of documents weigh?

He said he quarreled with his boss because he was pissed that he thinks it's a 2 person job but he's the only guy sent to retrieve the box.

Well I was just following orders telling the FedEx guy how much the box weighs from the box packer. And since the person who packed the box is slightly shorter then me and can lift the box, I don't think I'd believe his claims too much that the box is more then 15 kg, nor that you need two people to carry it.

My company retreat is on 15-16th November. We're going to a resort and there's Yoga at Sunrise at 5.30 am to 6.15 am, then there's a morning jogging session from 7.00 am to 8.30 am and a nature walk from 9.00 am to 10.30 am. Much as I would like to go for all 3, I still need to figure a time to have breakfast, and I suspect since the morning jogging session is on the beach, I doubt I will be able to run for 1h 30 min straight. That requires waaay more training then I have. I might be able to do 30 min on a flat road, but 1h 30 min is an entirely different story. Not to mention beach sand will make it harder to run on.

Also don't want to embarrass myself if I have to go at a snails pace compared to the rest of the pro joggers.

I would like to see what it's like running on the beach though.

Yeah...but I don't see monster posts 1/day. The average seems to be about 2-3 paragraphs of 3 sentences.

Again...it's a lazy minimum. Exceptions exist. The GM of 1 of the 2 I'm a player in posts once a day...for himself and about 10 NPCs. I see an update that looks like half a novel when he's done. But that's the rarity.

Um...what does your exercise capability have to do with your capability at your work? Are the yoga and jogging mandatory? Man I can't stand when companies evaluate you based on or make you participate in non-work factors. I had a dental lab do this with 5k runs. Like "I make custom fake teeth under a microscope. What does that have to do with walking 3 miles?!" It wasn't mandatory but it was a cliquey office withthe bosses, so I participated once or twice, but eventually refused and suddenly I stopped getting raises. For "unrelated reasons" even though my work quality was still top in the lab.

BTW that doesn't sound like a retreat as much as it does a forced play date. I mean...6:15 yoga? That's waking up at 6 or earlier. Unless your job normally requires you to clock in at 6:15am, this is stealing your time. Retreat...ugh...sounds like punishment now that I think about it. You sure you didn't mess up a file or something?

I don't really mean any of the following, but it is stated for comedic purposes only:

If that were a high school, and those were a*+$*$& teens who treat their teachers like s%++, I would understand. I mean, honestly, school zones in high schools are kind of superfluous. If you don't know to look both ways at 13, that's not tragedy, that's Darwin.

Day 500.

And for those who care for more details:

What is most suprising to me after hitting the 500-day mark is how much I still crave alcohol every so often. If it's excessively hot, or work is exceedingly boring, or I'm prepping for a particularly roleplay-intensive session, or even if I just prepared a really snazzy dinner and got a really good bottle of wine to go with it, the urge is still there. American society's focus on, "You must drink in order to celebrate!" doesn't help at all. So 500 days down, but I'm nowhere near the point that I'm willing to try even wine again.

On the other hand, Mort's comment that Hi talked about me keeping myself in "super great shape" really resonated, so I started thinking about it.

At 51 years old, I'm:

  • Fasting 3 days a week. Recent medical research supports this is fantastic for you. I'm getting my bloodwork done later this morning after doing it for two weeks, so I'll know more then. On the other hand, it makes non-fasting days much easier because I don't worry at all about what I'm eating. But old habits die hard, and in this case I don't want them to: My diet consists primarily of whole grains, dried fruits, leafy greens, other fruits and vegetables, white meats, and fish. Why would I change that?
  • Hiking 2+ miles a day 6 days a week: 3 with weight, 3 without. I average 4 mph with no weight, and 3.2 mph with about 30 pounds right now. I'm really noticing the impact of carrying the pack -- squatting to pick things up or reach low places is just stupid-easy. I can even do one-legged squats. Not bad at 51!
  • Stretching 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. Not only can I touch my toes, I can get all the way up my fingers. My goal is to put my palms on the floor in front of me.
  • Doing push-ups and sit-ups 5 days a week. Gotta keep that core strength up! I'm getting old!
  • Doing punches and kicks 5 days a week. OK. This is just for fun. But doing axe kicks over my head still feels good.
  • Looking at it in total, and what I can do as a 51-year-old American, yes, I am in far better shape than most. But keep in mind I get to compare myself to people like Whingey Wizzard (is he 5th Dan yet?) and my mother (complained about only being able to hike 12 miles a day when she hit 82), so I don't feel like I'm in that great shape.

    Your mileage may vary.

Oh, and WHY is Impus Major so skinny? Here's a great example: I buy the steamed, 190-calorie meals for my fasting days (apparently you're supposed to eat one very light meal in the late afternoon for... reasons). When Impus Major gets hungry, he seeks them out like a bloodhound and eats them all. Really ticks me off because they're a Safeway trip instead of a corner store trip. I'll see whether I can get the corner store guy to carry them.

So yeah, Mort. Tell your FedEx guy that you know a 51-year-old man who willingly carries 13.6 kg on his back for 3.5 kilometers, with a total uphill of around 100m. Oh, and he's only 168 cm.

A lot actually. Paper is very dense material. We rarely notice that because we usually deal with paper in form of objects that are not solid, containing a lot of empty spaces (paperboard), or are small (books, notebooks). You only remember that when you do things like carrying a paperboard box full of notebooks or card decks (which are tightly packed, foiled, and a lot inside a rather small box - and yet much heavier than large box containing five gameboard boxes).

I don't know about kilometers, or whatever, but I've been carrying around 8 foot long water logged timbers for three days now.

I wouldn't mind the fasting bit, NH, but my parents would start giving me funny looks if I didn't eat at dinner etc. I already got a funny look from my mom for skipping lunch because of work yesterday. Look, if I'm busy, things like eating and drinking can wait until the jobs done.

VE, I'm a morning person. My family and I consistently woke up at 5.30 am when we were on vacation in the States. We wanted to make the best use of daylight in winter.

So yeah, Mort. Tell your FedEx guy that you know a 51-year-old man who willingly carries 13.6 kg on his back for 3.5 kilometers, with a total uphill of around 100m. Oh, and he's only 168 cm.

Carrying 13.6 kg on a back is fine. Carrying 13.6 kg in your hands is asking for hernia (said the guy who lifted a corner of a wooden pallet filled with boardgame parts over a threshold to be able to push it into the office).

I am pretty sure the couriers are not given proper backpacks or carrying rigs. While that could be useful in certain circumstances, couriers too often carry things by hand only a short distance where putting the correctly load on back and taking it down might take more time than actual carrying.
