over an hour.

I know not a great long time, but I'm done. I burn way to much money on the damn things, and when my oldest son asked me if he was good at school would I quit I said yes. So I've been trying to smoke less and less over the last week or so, but today I didn't bother buying any more. So here goes. :S

Good luck and as an ex-smoker it can be done.:)

Scarab Sages

Good luck!

Stay strong, my drow brother!

Liberty's Edge

I'm glad I never started, but I have plenty of friends who are trying to quit.

Good luck, man. It's gonna suck for a while.

Good luck. I'm rooting for you! I've been working on quitting for just over a month. Is hard.

Feel free to piggy back this thread to vent and update on how you're doing. ;)

Maybe we can help each other.

And thanks for all the well wishes everyone!

Hang in there! When it gets hard, think of your kids.

I hope your deity of choice grants you the strength to defeat this vice. Remember your son. If you can not do it for yourself, do it for him.

Liberty's Edge

Go Moorluck! :)

Be strong, hang in there.

Think about how much money you save.
Think about the health benefit.
Think of how much less disgusting you'll smell.
Think of your boy.

And if all that is not enough, think of how I will laugh incessantly and shrilly at your failure if you start smoking again!

GO MOORLUCK!!!

In terms of quitting smoking, see if you can use this time to start a new manual hobby. My wife got into knitting and crocheting, maybe you can get into painting miniatures, playing the spoons(don't laugh, it's actually pretty hard!), some small musical instrument(bonus points if its a woodwind so you can use your mouth along with your hands- no, not in that way Urizen), or just something you've always wanted to get into but didn't have the time(or money!) for.

The Exchange

2 hours and twenty minutes. :P

Just remember you crazy jester, He who laughs last....

Spoiler:
was the last one to get the joke. ;)

Thanks for the motivation. ;)

Keep going, the third hour is the hardest next to the third day.

Humps your leg in celebration.

Ack!! o.O I didn't realize that we were starting today...for real... Ok. 11:20 am, done. I put mine up... <3 you baby!

Thank you. I hope we're all successful!

A couple of things that have helped me so far:
1. Diverting the urge. When I have a craving, I pick up my knitting and knit a few rows. It keeps my hands busy and my mind occupied until the craving passes-- and at the end there are socks! If you have some hobby that is both mentally engaging and involves using your hands, you might try this.

2. Break the routine. Coffee and a cigarette on the front porch in the morning was a habit. For the first couple of weeks, I stopped making coffee at home in the morning and bought a cup on my way to work so that I was changing the routine that surrounded the morning cigarette.

So far, my real weakness is smoking when I'm out with friends on the weekend. We barhop a lot, and my resistance decreases when I've had a drink or two. So far, I've managed to restrict myself to buying a pack, having a few, and leaving the rest with the bartender to give out to customers who bum smokes.

You guys should have publicized your quit date so we could have sent care packages of sugarless gum, cinnamon sticks, baby carrots, rubber bands, binder clips, etc.

Binder clips? O_o

Best not to dwell on how long it has been, that is kind of like looking down while climbing a tall ladder. I quit several months ago, the best tactic I found was to keep myself busy and away from those overwhelming desires as much as possible. Keep busy at work, eat an apple, have tea, work-out, expend that energy somehow and keep looking forward with grit and determination. You are doing this for your health, your family, yourself and nature.

Just think of how accomplished you will feel when it is all over. Your mind and your body will tell you it is impossible to live without them, but you are the master of your flesh and you may will it to be.

Most importantly, never ever go back to the way that you were. Smoking is horrible, and addiction is a powerful thing, but once you are over that hump (takes a while) you will be amazed.

Best Wishes.

Yes. You use them like rubber bands, only for the constant sensation rather than instantaneous. Location of use is a personal choice.

I...see.

Also, do any your friends smoke? You might want to keep them at(can't believe I'm saying this) facebook-length for a while, at least until you've shaken the first few cravings.

Wait when did the Book of Vile Darkness get allowed? ;)

Silver Crusade

We're all rooting for you!

Shadow Lodge

I myself have quit, and haven't had one in about a week.

If you falter, try the patch. It worked for me.

It is really hard to quit smoking. Don't give up, even if you backslide.

12:27 pm...I want one..badly. I am currently tearing my store apart rearranging it in an effort to divert attention.

I get what you are saying, but knowing how long I have already gotten lets me know how much longer I will be able to go. :D

Watch the Teletubies it'll help. No wait, that's for something else.

Perhaps you could paint Pathfinder minis as a distraction technique.

just do the fine details before you hands start shaking.

Liberty's Edge

Don't really have any advice quitting the nicotine, but you got my support!

I've been working on my mom for the last 30 years and she still hasn't quit. My dad quit cold turkey, but that was pretty much something he had to do since he smoked his last cig while we drove him to the ER for his major coronary "incident" at 54 years old and he was in ICU for a week.

If nothing else, just keep the thought in you head of sparing your kids that drive and stay at the hospital (I was only 13 at the time).

RPG Superstar 2012

Good luck, Moor...luck...

I'm pulling for you! :)

If you can't distract yourself at Badd Kitty, where can you? Good luck, guys.

Sovereign Court

I send up my well wishes and encouragement with everyone else's!

heh, it would help if I would get some frakking customers in. There hasn't been anyone in here in about 45 minutes. Makes taking a break tempting. I am going to eat, and then go back to tearing the place apart and putting it back together.

Mine already have. :/

When Howard Stern quit smoking, supposedly he picked up a sourball habit to replace it, and then had to wean himself off of candy. It's like methadone for junkies, only more effective. And, fortunately, sugar is easier to kick than nicotine.

I mention that because the same thing happened to me. I used gummy bears. 20 years later, and sometimes I'll be watching TV and get a massive gummy craving. But at least they're cheaper than cigarettes, even if they're worse for my teeth.

P.S. All my friends who tried the patch ultimately failed to quit smoking, because they were still hooked on nicotine.

Grand Lodge

Good luck! You can do this, and will be much better off. If you aren't a smoke walker (don't have a habit of taking walks with a cigarette) then taking up walking may be helpful. A friend at work quit 6 years ago by taking a short walk when the cravings hit. She is still smoke free.

Time to start that novel you always wanted to write.

I replaced cigarettes with self love. My forearms grew so much I could be mistaken for a spinach eatin' sailor. So my lady-friend helps me out every now and again.

I really hope that you can do this. If I can do this...not smoke and instead paint figs and find cheesecake, then you can, too.

And a little Dundee variety pack every now and again (or just eating in restaurants in Illinois) does not hurt as they don't allow smoking indoors anymore.

Damn Illinois Nazis.

~chuckles~ Well good luck and I hope that you stay busy. ~grins~ So much for calling and harrassing you at work. ~winks~

S3x is a good distraction and so is jail if you do the first in public.

Chases the monkey.

Yap, yap, yap!
