I can just see a bare chested Superman screaming "THIS IS METROPOLIS!" while kicking Darkseid through the Sun.
I actually really loved Superman Returns and Brandon Routh made a great Supes/Clark. I will admit it would have been improved if Lex had actually gotten some of that 'advanced alien technology' alluded to during his description of his Evil Plan. Oh well.

While I thought Brandon Routh made a decent Superman, I thought his Clark Kent was not as good as Christopher Reeve's portrayal. I also thought that Kevin Spacey was an excellent choice for Lex Luthor.
My problem was the story itself. I thought it was terrible and vastly underused the potential of some great actors.
I've got no problems with a Brit playing the role. I've heard from several folks that the man has some serious acting talent, and I think he looks enough the part to make things convincing.
As long as they have a good story (and considering the creative team I believe they will), and don't overdue it with cheesy CGI (the way I'm afraid Green Lantern will) then I look forward to seeing it.

I've enjoyed Smallville for the most part over the years, and think that Welling did a good job in that. However, I've always thought of that as a more non-traditional version of the Superman mythos and I'm not sure how good Welling would be in a more traditional version. I think he'd make a decent Superman, but not perhaps Clark Kent.

Probably true. As a side note, I just learned the the suit that they showed on the Season 9 finale of Smallville and that he may wear at some point this season is the same one that the used in Superman Returns.
Yeah, I thought that was really neat that they were able to get that suit.

I was reading that they were also offered one of Christopher Reeve's old suits but decided it would not fit into the style of the show.

In every Superman movie they've made, there's always been a main human villain (usually Luthor) surrounded by bumbling idiots. I hope they write in a REAL threat this time... Something BIG. Something like Brainiac, Darkseid, or Doomsday. If they still have Luthor in there, I hopet they make him a scary guy. A cold, calculating psychopath.

Agreed. I've seen the guy on Boardwalk Empire, and he's great in that. I'm really hoping he can pull it off.

The only casting issue I have from Snyder is Amy Adams for Lois Lane. Olivia Wilde would have been a better choice. I also have concerns with Snyder after seeing Sucker Punch - visually entertaining, horribly, horribly written story. The guy is great with visuals. Also, General Zod should have been saved for a sequel, perhaps start with Luthor who is the one entity that General Zod would view as something on par as he viewed Jor-El.

Well, remember, Snyder isn't writing this one. That's being left up to David Goyer and others, and I think they're working off a basic outline done by Christopher Nolan. So, while I'm also worried about Snyder, I think he can do good if he works well with these others. Though I'll admit, I would have rather seen Nolan himself direct.
As for Zod vice Luthor as the main villain, I can see this as part of that Nolan influence. As seen in the Batman movies, they saved the archnemesis for the second film. Maybe that's what they're doing here. Or, maybe they'll also have Lex, but he'll be more of a background villain, pulling the strings or acting as support for the main villain by providing money or resources.

Meh. I am so tired of Luthor in the movies. Personally, I want to see "Superman Unleashed." It would be nice to see another fight where he really lets loose with his powers rather than being reactive to the whims of Luthor. I've never felt that they've managed to capture Luthor's capabilities in the films.

Agreed on Lex being a background/moving figure rather than the core villain of a movie. It's just ... boring? Superman should be doing super bad ass stuff against a villain and the villain should be pushing Superman to his ropes. Given the fact he IS Superman slims some options but assuming this reboot doesn't fail I'd be surprised/disappointed not to see Doomsday show up in a sequel somewhere.

I resepctfully disagree. With the Batman movies Nolan has proven pretty good at putting lots of big names in and not having the movie suffer.
Look at Batman Begins: Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Rutger Hauer - all older, big name actors. Then you had the younger big names - Christian Bale, Cilian Murphy, Ken Watanabe, Katie Holmes.
And let's go back a bit further to 1978's Superman. It may not hold up against the test of time, but back then it was a big hit. Some of the big names in that were Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Glen Ford, Ned Beatty, and Jackie Cooper.
So it can work. And with Nolan involved, I think it will. And Snyder seems to be a pretty professional guy. I think he can handle the big names.
