This drew me in like a gnome into the FirstWorld. Even though this case was brought forth last year, it has finally reached resolution. Well there goes my masterplan of going to jail to get my RPG fix or recruiting players from prisoner population. It sounds like a KODT strip. I wonder if this applies to all RPGs?

Wierd decision.
Amazing the expert evidence was accepted so whole heartedly.
"He further testified that fantasy
role-playing games like D&D have “been found to
promote competitive hostility, violence, and addictive
escape behavior, which can compromise not only the
inmate’s rehabilitation and effects of positive programming,
but endanger the public and jeopardize the safety
and security of the institution.”
--yet the expert didnt produce any evidence of it happening and the affidavits saying that it had not happened in the past (which seem to be accepted)were not evidence on point ie not evidence leading to undermine the inference that it might happen in the future ( I always thought past conduct was the best predictor of future conduct).
"He explained that the policy (of banning the game)
was intended to promote prison security because co
operative games can mimic the organization of gangs
and lead to the actual development thereof. Muraski
elaborated that during D&D games, one player is denoted
the “Dungeon Master.” The Dungeon Master is tasked with
giving directions to other players, which Muraski
testified mimics the organization of a gang. At bottom, his
testimony about this policy aim highlighted Waupun’s
worries about cooperative activity among inmates, particularly
that carried out in an organized, hierarchical fashion."
---DM is tasked with giving directions to the other players which mimics a gang?? huh?
how is his evidence of what happens in a game accepted as accurate?
So D&D structure mimics as a gang?- That is his evidence?
Was the prisoner unrepresented?
There was some stuff about it being undesirable to allow escapism- which I dont agree with but I accept D&D does do that.
It seemed the threshold that the prison had to establish was that the activity "can" lead to undesirable behaviour- cases of D&D players committing offences or suicide were cited to support this. If this is the only threshold I guess they can ban anything.
How does the dicta and or precedent impact upon gaming in schools etc
