Serpent’s Skull or would another AP be good?

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

I in my gaming group we have 3 Game Masters. I am one of them. Me and another friend (Fred) started the group when D&D 3.0 came out in 2000. We have had people come and go but we always have about 6 people in our group. We each run a campaign and we switch every other week DMing.

I was DMing Rise of the Runelords, we were at the end of Pathfinder #1 and real life happen. We temporary lost a couple people including myself and added a couple people including Fred ‘s wife. I am back and I started the group with TC1 and it went well. We then started playing D1 and in the middle Fred’s wife at the end of a session get frustrated and announces that she is not having fun. There were some non-game issues that be fixed like the tool we use for character generation and leveling and using the tactical vs. freeform combat.

I also asked the group some questions on gaming in general like ‘what kinds of adventures do you like and why?’

It turns out that the group like Dungeons Craws and Exploring as first and second respectively. Followed at a distinct Espionage then another big gap then Political Intrigue and then Mysteries.

It turns out that Fred’s Wife does not like Dungeons crawls but the group does. So the group discusses it and we decide that around 40% dungeons would be about right.

I would like to run an Adventure Path. Focusing on exploring with some dungeons. Fred is already running Kingmaker therefore, it off the table. I was thinking Serpent’s Skull would be good. Is their any other AP that would fit?

My second question is how would you get a group from Falcon’s Hollow onto Jenivere?

setpent's skull would be good for your group, don't know how to get them from falcon's hollow maybe river trip to almas, then ship from almas to corentyn, or there is always ed greenwood's preferred methods which is just put a random portal that goes to magnimar or somewhere else.

I have been thinking about this for the last couple days…

The idea I had is to switch the party to Slow advancement chart until I have them in the AP and they are the correct level.

One of my PC has a father in the military. Therefore I could get them involved in LB1: Tower of the Last Baron, but I would tune it down a little. I could remove a level or two from the NPC and maybe give the party some potions to buff them up.

In LB1 the PC could find the note from Poltur. If the PCs don’t find the note then one of General Dakovya’s men could find it. General Dakovya could send the PC to investigate.

This gets the party to the coast.
Note: I have read LB1 but not LB2 so I am not sure this will work out.

This would get them heading to Chimera Cove, Poltur could hear that the PCs are coming and has prepping his ship(s) to leave. PC arrives at have some struggle with Poltur then he escapes on a ship heading towards Cheliax. The PC needs to chase him. If they kill Poltur maybe what the PC want is still on the ship….

This gets the party in Cheliax
Maybe Poltur has connections with Free Captains of the Shackles and he heads south to Sargava when Poltur figures out he being chased.

Liberty's Edge

Serpent's Skull is, I believe, frontloaded with exploration and backloaded with Dungeon Crawling. Although, that's just my impression - I haven't seen anything beyond the first module, and only part of that. So, take it for what it's worth.

Adventure Paths ranked by Dungeoneering Goodness

4. Serpent's Skull: This one is likely to have the best dungeons, but they are all back-loaded into the last 3 books. If your players lack patience they may grow frustrated with the campaign before it "gets to the good part"

3. Council of Thieves: There are dungeons in pretty much every book, but there's not really any exploration/travel elements.

2. Second Darkness: This AP has a few dungeons in each book, and a bit of travel in each of the last 4 books. The reason this one isn't number one is that it's the easy for this AP to fall off the rails when the expectations from the piratey first books hit the elf heavy latter books.

1. Curse of the Crimson Throne: This path has a lot of short, punchy urban themed dungeons in the first three books. Goes travelling in the fourth book, hits a Megadungeon in the Fifth book and is back to shorter punchier dungeons in the sixth book. Honestly for the above mix, this might be the BEST AP for you.

DISCLAIMER: I have not read Legacy of Fire as I'm playing through it...

Thank you for your replies.

@Jeremiziah,
Dungeon are not bad, a matter of fact most of my players want dungeons. I my original plans were to do the TC1, D1, D1.5, D4, E1, LB1 and LB2. I was going to supplement with other dungeon crawls, which I had planned at least 3 more. That would be at least 6 Dungeon crawls and very little traveling or exploring.

Therefore, I thought I would change what I planned to do. The other thought I had is most story give the characters a sense of purpose or a quest, like destroy this evil ring or stop this evil ruler or save the princess. So to give the group a sense of purpose, I was thinking about doing an Adventure Path.

@DM_aka_Dudemeister,
I have read Serpent's Skull: Souls for Smuggler’s Shiv. I think it is a foreshadowing of the whole the AP. It has the PCs exploring this island then at the end of the adventure they need to go into a dungeon or two. I like that it set the purpose early, at the end of the first adventure. Find the lost city and explore.

I do not know much about Council of Thieves. I would say it the closes AP to where the party is currently located. I will have to learn more. I wonder if you could tie it into LB1 and/or LB2.

I have the whole Second Darkness AP. It seems a bit far too, unless I move the first 3 adventures. Maybe have Shadow in the Sky could be set at pirate cove from LB2. Children of the Void could happen anywhere. Armageddon Echo would have to be changed and I will need to think about it.

Again, I do not know much about Curse of the Crimson Throne. Is does it have a lot of Political Intrigue or is it a puzzle/Mysteries? Could I change the location to something close to Andoren? Maybe Taldor?
