Has anyone here played this?
I have played Civ II - Civ IV pretty extensively, but the ratings on Civ 5 have been poor to say the least. I may give it a pass - which I never thought I'd do!
Anyone tried it?
I like it but you need a good machine to play it - mine cant handle the graphics requirements and crashes when my empire is too large.
The game play is has been simplified and but the concepts are a lot more complex.
I had to unlearn all my previous civ strategy's which was good, its a lot of fun I would give it 8.5 out of 10 or 9 if my PC didn't crash.

I liked it, but I didn't love it. The game felt like it was taking itself way too seriously, particularly as opposed to the whimsical, almost light hearted nature of III and IV.
As such, for me, it hurts my immersion.
That being said, the rules are simplified in ways. I like the new grid layout. Managing cities is easier. Your advisers don't suck automatically. Alliances and diplomacy work much better with AI opponents. And the vassal/minor states system is pretty rich and provides for its own entertainment (if inconvenient at times.)
Overall... if Civ IV were a 9 out of 10, I'd give Civ V an 8 out of 10. Nothing actually detracts from the game experience (assuming your PC is powerful enough not to crash on you), but for some reason, it never drew me in.
I recall the first time I played Civ IV I started playing at 7:00 at night and didn't look up from the game until 6:00 the next morning.
The first time I played Civ V I played, maybe, three hours before I wanted to do something else.

Pre-ordered it and played it a few times. I think it's a good game, though it plays a bit differently than the last couple of versions. It simplifies a number of aspects of game play, but overall I don't know if they over simplified somethings for my likings (the new naval transport style in particular). They changed siege engines back to siege engines. Great at range, dead if attacked with ground units (I can't remember if this was II or III that had the siege engines as sitting ducks).
IMO if you were a big fan of Civ, I think it's definitely worth taking a look at it.
