So, Karzoug is smart, right?

Appallingly smart.

And he can scry out of the extradimensional space he’s stuck in.

So, what happens when he plays ‘Let’s Make a Deal’ with the party rather than die permanently in the final fight?

“No, don’t kill me – I need your help to stop the other Runelords from rising.”

“No, don’t kill me – I need your help to stop the Second Starfall.”

“No, don’t kill me – I need your help to….”

Thoughts?

How well would that work for your players?

This might be tough to pull off since Karzoug has been trying to kill the PC's since the beginning.

So what to do.....

1) Have Karzoug create a clone and thrust him into the battle while Karzoug is off hiding somewhere else?

2) Actually make Karzoug a pawn to higher power. In my RotRL, I actually have a higher power group using Karzoug to gather the souls for his runewell to return and when Karzoug is ready the party (or other higher power) slay him and the souls of the Runewell go to the higher power so they can raise their dead god.

He is appallingly smart, but he's also overconfident to the point of insanity. While he may have contingency plans, I'd have them be along the line of "If I can't have the world, no one can!" Perhaps, to continue the adventure path, he's devised a way that in the case of his death, the Tarrasque is awakened or some otherplanar evil is unleashed. I wouldn't have it be a situation where you'll just be fighting Karzoug over again. Doing so cheapens the first fight and makes the second seem repetitive.

My actual thought was that what he'd do is try and use the party as cat's paws to eliminate threats that he considered dangerous to him and his plans while he worked on gathering his powers and forces to eliminate the party once and for all. The other Runelords for example, several of which are actually far more likely to punch party buttons than he is (at least at the start)

The overconfidence angle is worth revisiting, though; I was, admittedly, thinking of him being more of a rational villain, and that's not as likely as I'd thought on further reflection. Not as bad as, say, the Runelord of Pride would have been but I doubt that any of these guys are really all that tightly wrapped.

Damn board monster ate my post

Shortened : It's too early, and I don't think my players would ever agree to that kind of deal with the devil, yet :

Spoiler:

There is the whole business with the denizens of Leng, and the thought of this thingie running amok, plus the "interesting guys" under Kaer Maga" (read the damn book already !) might make a good bargaining chip.

Good gaming anyways, and post us informed.
