Help creating a Kingmaker NPC

Kingmaker

the NPC was really only suppose to be a messenger/assistant type who worked for a noble house. he relayed the official charter with one of the PC's. i really wasn't planning on having him continue on with the party but i just forgot for him to leave after reaching the outpost and heading out into the wildlands. i never even stated him up! the only role he has played is help keeping watch and watching the horses while the party is away. the party has gotten used to having him around and since i haven't gave him any stats i figure i should since he was already cought in one wandering monster battle, though all he did was yell "willow wisp!!!" and run for his life lol.

now i got an idea i want to build him around but im undecided what class/classes to make him. he could later play a role of a leader or henchman later on so i really want to flesh him out now. i want to build him like Van hell-sings assistant. knows a lot about monsters, tinkers making weapons and items to fight monsters (like potions, minor alchemical items, minor magic items, potions, and such). i want him to have class abilities that give him a boost against curtain monsters but im not looking to optimize him either- he's more a sidekick not a frontman. monster knowledge is a must

so far i've narrowed it down to ranger, inquisitor, alchemist, or a combination of them through multiclass. right now im leaning alchemist/inquisitor of Erestil with a focus on community. establishing a community and protecting it and it's rulers from dangerous monsters while doing his best to be a vital part of the community and helping it prosper.

one issue im having with choosing these classes is explaining why he was a meager messenger-though i have a few ideas.

i don't want him to be too optimized and maybe give a small taste of the new classes for originality. i plan on starting him off 2 levels behind the pc's and level him up as a henchman even though he isn't one he may later become one. since we are using a high stat game i rolled his stats 3d6 drop the lowest and got some decent stats to do whatever i need him to be.

these are his base stats-
Quin Zaldory 10 13 16 12 16 11

he is human and his racial bonus will probably not be on a 16 so the pc's wont have a super leader later on.

any help or ideas would be appreciated

The only thing that may be odd about him becoming an Alchemist is that he would all of a sudden start throw bombs and mutating daily. The PC's may think that something bad has happened to him since he was mild mannered Clark Kent for so long and now he's gone a bit haywire. You could downplay his Alchemist abilities, but at that point why stat him up?

What about something like a PC class with some NPC class levels thrown in? It would water him down a bit, but allow him to continue with his current skill set. How about something like Bard/Adept(potion making, herbal remedies) or Bard/Expert (wildernessy stuff)? It would allow him to brew potions, be knowledgeable about a lot of things...basically continue being himself with a little planned reserve if push comes to shove or in case he becomes an official henchman.

YMMV

Scarab Sages

What level do you want him to start?

An NPC class Expert may be the way to go. With a few levels - and then begin to multi-class to perhaps a bard or alchemist.

well he will start at level one. actually now that i think of it Herbo there was one more battle he actually attacked, he threw a flask of flaming oil- so alchemist wouldnt be a stretch.

i considered making him an expert and taking mostly knowledge's as his class skills. i actually considered bard/adept or bard/expert Herbo. that was originally the route i was going to go. but bard just seemed too flamboyant happy go lucky. instead of the oddball lab making sidekick who's kinda nerdy with a goofy monster hunter demeanor.

now that i put some thought into his class origin could be easy to explain. he could have just been level 0 (halfway between 1 level)and made a good messenger because of his writing and knowledge skill and was still saving up for his own pursuits.

i also like inquisitor because some minor healing would be usefull and santuary would explain why he's never been killed watching the horses lol.

i also like the alchemist because of his potion tinkering and bombs, but im not fond of his mutegens. makes the alchemist feel like dr jeckal/mr Hyde lol.

this is why i'm leaning alchemist/inquisitor.

i picture a skiny foppish guy oddly dressed with a reapeating crossbow laden with potions, bombs, vials of holy water, stakes, smoke sticks, tindertwigs, and multiple holy symbols (i picture that guy from the mummy pulling out holy symbols untill the mummy sees the star of david and takes the guy as a slave lol).

Good call!! Very visual this character.

Don't know if you've ever seen Young Guns 2; but the scholar/author who traveled with Pat Garret to document the chase of Billy the Kid.....is good for sprinkling in some of the flavor. So fish out of water out in the wilds and frustrating to the frontiersmen travelling with him.

But in the end - his knowledge of the indigenous indian (native american) language saves them from a bloody end when they entered the indian's holy ground.

This sounds a lot like the Archivist I am playing in a 3.5 game of Savage Tide, even the repeater. I believe the archivist in Pathfinder is a variant of the bard class in Advanced Players' Guide. That would explain his bookishness and some knowledge of the weirder kind of monsters.

On the other hand, you may not want to model him on Lorenzo, as my dice-luck with him sucks!

I've decided im going to start him off an inquisitor and dip a bit into alchemist. once the party slays some beasts Quin can start playing around with monsters components and making botched potions "that really aren't potions at all". quin "here pour this troll urine on you and it will give you great regenerating properties". "hmmm that smells really bad i don't think i did something right... huh" walks off muttering to himself flipping through a tome. The party just met up with Belkan and Quin can actually learn his alchemy from him to tie it all together later on. I think for his mutegens im gona use them very sparingly later and more for amusement and roleplaying then power playing buffing. Quin "with this new potion i designed here i can grow to the size of a giant and smash our enemies!". quin quaffs his new potion and his body contorts growing a hunched back and huge trunk like arm giving him his first mutegen lol. Quin "hmm i must of not added in enough giants hair, oh well no time for that now there's beasts to fell!"

Hysterical!!!

Something that could be done for Bokken as well. Whom I portray as "walter-esque" from Fringe
